Red-faced Mousebird

Sexes alike.
Red facial patch is diagnostic. In flight the grey rump contrasts slightly with the back and tail which appear to be slightly suffused with green.
Head and breast are pale cinnamon.
The birds usually fly in small parties and have a fast powerful and direct flight action.
Habitat
Thornveld, open broad-leaved woodland, lowland fynbos and suburban gardens.
Call
A clear whistle, 'tsee-tee-tee' the first note being highest in pitch.

LOL. I can see why you'd think Common Waxbill by just looking at the picture but in the field one wouldn't make that misID. This is a Red-faced Mousebird, a MUCH bigger bird with a MUCH longer tail.

Chirinda thanks, would it perhaps be a juvenile as it appeared more grey blue than brown and the beak was red and not black .......... I tried my Newmans but got hopelessly lost

Certainly a juv Red-Faced. The bill is a crimson colour with only the tip black and of course plumage changes with adolescence. They are quite gregarious and you will seldom find just one in a tree and if you do, he's probably waiting for three or four mates to fly over the route he has just flown. :)

Nkulu, you don't need to be a stiffneck to ask for IDs.

But if you would like to become one.....you are!
