The Green Wood-hoopoe. I love them. They are beautiful. They live in groups and I love their wierd call. There is a group of them who visited Orpen when I was there over Christmas. I watched them until they left beyond the boundaries of the fences... It was amazing to watch how the mothers would care for their young so. The one was calling in a tree and its parent came back to fetch and comfort it. It was too adorable!

By far the most favourite Kruger bird for me is the Pennant-Winged Nightjar. I have seen them in the hills behind Punda on an old track along the fenceline and previously at Hwange National Park in Zim.

I'm with you on both counts Jen, and on hearing the African Fish Eagle's call I too am instantly transported to Africa.

I had decided on the same two although not an easy decision!
The Bataleur for its beauty and I love to hear the call of the Fish Eagle..then I know I'm in Kruger.
Of the small birds I love the Lilac Breasted Roller ..they are so pretty and the Yellow Billed Hornbill... they are full of character! I could go on and on!!

It's an impossible question, but my immediate gut reaction was the crested francolin, as that call early in the morning/evening has stuck with me since I was a "laaitie"!

Yellow-billed Hornbill.
The ultimate Kruger bird for me.

From a call point of view,

The emerald spotted wood-dove in the afternoon and g.fowl in the morning are the two ultimate bush sounds.

Although I don't see them all that often, I love the Purplecrested Turaco. Of course you cannot beat the beauty and sound of the African Fish Eagle

Natal Francolin's call is most probably the most awesome Kruger sound for me.
