I didn't even know this was possible, but my cat caught one a week or two ago.

I honestly thought they would be too fast for her, but obviously she's a pretty good hunter.

Holding it, I couldn't help notice the beautiful sheen of the feathers. Must be cool to watch it under ultra violet light.

No pic--the bird was not very cooperative; but I spotted a lovely male Marico's Sunbird feeding on nectar from mistletoe flowers in a tree at the Timbavati picnic spot in Kruger on the 22nd of June.

I recently read somewhere that the Marico Sunbird relies heavily on the Wild Cotton Bush (Gossypium Herbaceum ssp. Africanum) to line their nests. The article went as far as to say that, without the Wild Cotton, Marico Sunbirds could suffer a decline in numbers: I suppose not enough insulation in the nest to protect the babies = higher than normal nestling mortality?!? I found this fascinating, to say the least!

I have since planted a few seeds and hope to hit potluck with them growing. Although we don't have any Marico Sunbirds here in Amanzimtoti, I'm sure the other sunbirds will also make good use of the "cotton balls" surrounding the little seeds.

Kind Regards

lee lewis
