Swallow, Pearl-breasted

Unread postby Scottm » Sun Mar 04, 2012 1:29 am

Can one of the experts confirm this as a pearlbreasted Swallow (planesberg, Feb) or am I totally off track? I did not see any white rump when in flight, typical of a house martin. Any other possibilities?

Well you could consider Grey-rumped but I think you have got it right. Grey-rumped has longer tail streamers that come well past the wing tips although this chap looks immature so they may not have grown yet.

Scottm,I also think it might be a Young Pearl-breasted Swallow one can already see some blueish feathers on the back. They are in Pilanesberg.

Quite common along the Garden route of South Africa. Sometimes confused with Common House-Martin, but the latter species shows little "white socks" and a white rump.

Puzzling over this one :hmz: Is it perchance a house martin? Seen at Mokala in late October 2012.

Looks like a Pearl-breasted Swallow, Arks.

House-Martin has "white socks" on its feet.

Thanks WTM and Ladybirder.

@WTM: I never knew about those 'socks' 8) , but now that I look more closely at the pic in my Newman's, I see the little white feet. Thanks for teaching me something new -- yet again!
