Found this African Hawk Harrier - Gymnogene in my garden this morning yesterday I saw him find a baby bird and eat it in a palm tree about 150m from my garden I was able to stand about 10m from him and watch him as he enjoyed his breakfast.Image

In the past few weeks spotted two new species in my garden - streaky headed seedeaters (2) and a family of thick-billed weavers (male, female and juvenile) that visited my pond.

Three new visitors to the pond in the past few weeks - giant kingfisher, greenbacked heron and yesterday - a hamerkop!
While the first two were very nervous, this hamerkop was not in the least bit perturbed! It landed on the wall at the back of the pond, took a dip in the water and sat there a long time preening itself. My husband even went out the back door without it being disturbed!
In the end it flew off without attempting to fish.

My most interesting birds include:
Puffback
White fronted bee-eaters
Red-thoughted wryneck
Greater honey guide.

At one stage I also regularly had a reed cormorant that feasted on the tillapias in my pond.

After many years, we have finally persuaded a flock40 or so White-breasted Cormorants from roosting in a Norfolk Pine in our back garden. We had become sick and tired of our back garden and the walls of our house being covered with BIG birdy-doo and puked-up chokka and fish.

I've been considering posting in this one a long time, so here goes.

At the moment we have a pair of African Hoopoes who've just successfully raised a chick. It's looking for food by itself now but still much smaller than the parents.
Supposing the warm winter so far caused that.

We have a large flock(?) of Cape White Eyes with a Fairy Flycatcher that joins them every summer. The Paradise Flycatchers come first, soon after the fairy is there.

In January we had an interesting evening visitor. A European Hobby was around for a couple of weeks catching bats at dusk. Something to see 8)

A few years back a Cape Eagle Owl was uprooted from its usual place when construction on a shopping mall started. He made his home in a tree in front of our neighbour's house. Disappeared after a while.

The weirdest visitor of all was a Hamerkop that appeared out of nowhere on our neighbour's rooftop  Where THAT came from we don't know. Could've been after the Koi fishes in our pond?

At the moment I have a common starling (etourneau sansonnet) who occupied the hole of a woodpecker (pic-vert)

The Greater Honeyguide has however forced me to change my ring tone on my cellphone as I kept on running for the phone only to find that it is not ringing. It seems that I can change it back now as I have not seen or heard it since the start of winter.

Hi forumites!

This visitor dropped in over the weekend!

Image

We think it is a juvenile gymnogene - our first ever close-up sighting of one. Could any of the bird experts confirm the ID please? Many thanx! :D
