African Darter
Anhinga rufa

Size: Lenght 80cm;weight 950g-1,8kg
Colour: Male mainly black with chestnut foreneck boreded by white stripe;female and non-breeding male browner with pale underpants
Habitat: Quiet inland waters;rarely on estuaries and coastal lagoons

Habits: Swims low in water, often with only its head and neck showing (hence the name 'Snakebird'). Often perches on rock or post with outspread wings as seen below. Often roosts with cormorants in reedbeds or partly submerged trees.

This guy was quite a character, he had swum onto the log in the reeds and sat there contently while having a stretch in the process. However, that was before he realised that I was watching... Off he went as quick as he had came :roll: ...

I never realised that these birds actually speared or "darted " their prey.
As you can see from the photo it's lower mandible has speared the fish..it was quite a mission for the bird to then unspear the fish and swallow it whole !
