It looks like a scruffy specimen of an African Pipit. By far the most common Pipit in the Park.

Cheers

Niall.

Thanks Niall much appreciated! Was thinking along those lines but was just worried how it had groundscraper thrush like markings on a pipits body...

Pipits continue to puzzle (and defeat) me. Is this perhaps a longbilled pipit? Seen along Darling Hills Road on 4 October 2010.

Hi Arks - the clincher would be the colour of the outer tail feathers - white on African and buff on Long billed Pipit. However the yellow lower mandible and general jizz of the bird suggest African.

Cheers

Niall.

:( Thanks, Niall, I suspected I wasn't quite that lucky  It was also a very vocal bird and posed nicely for me, which I thought relatively unusual? A very nice sighting altogether!

I go with African Pipit as I seem to notice on the photo a yellow (African Pipit) rather than pink base to the bill (Long-billed Pipit).

Not 100% sure on this one (still struggle with larks and pipits), is it an African pipit?

Would agree with African Pipit Arks, but you don't perhaps have front shots ?

Thanks for your help here, DD. Unfortunately those are my best two pix of the birdie. And as they usually do, it was also moving away from me  I figure that it was likely an African pipit because they are the most common?

I've post another not very good "mystery bird" photo in the LBJ thread. Any ideas on this one?
