Fascinating stuff, francois!! Quite interesting to learn about a bird as an individual — and that some of these herons have such very long lives 8)

Can anyone help me please? I am totally in the dark with this one!

It was quite a distance, so I had to do a great deal of cropping. :slap:

Even tho your photo looks very light (is it possibly a bit overexposed as well as cropped?), it looks to me like a grey heron .... A great egret or a blackheaded heron would have dark legs, so grey heron seems most likely.

Thanks arks :) It is a horrible photo!! Micetta is right, it looks like a ghost!

Although overexposed, it definitely looked very white (at a distance) :? hence my confusion :wall:

*edit* Had a look at "proper" photos and agree with you, will edit on my TR :)

I took this on 18 June at Biyamiti hide. Is it a Grey heron? (I see no black stripe on his head and his legs look darker!).

I would go for Grey Heron juv.

Look at the dark line under the eye.

Another reason for my answer, the eye it self is yellow as the eye of the black head juv is black.

The Grey Heron forms a superspecies with the Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) of North America and the Cocoi or White-necked Heron (Ardea cocoi) of South America, all being very similar. They are species that diverged from one another in isolation and have remained largely or entirely geographically separated. Taxonomists group such closely related species with no overlapping distributions into a superspecies.

Superspecies are especially interesting because they represent a "snapshot" of the process of speciation – evolution caught in the act!
