Finch, Scaly-feathered

Unread postby Yolandé Oelsen » Tue Nov 25, 2008 10:13 pm

Can someone please help me ID this bird: I thought it to be Scaly feathered finch?? But the bill seems pink.
It's not a very clear pic.
Seen at Zaagkuildrift in Oct.

Hi Yolandé

I would say it is indeed a Scaly-feathered Finch….only reason why I’m sure of that is because I also took a photo of one quite some time ago….it also has a pink bill (Scaly-feathered Finch)
I know what you mean about the bill….in my SASOL guide it does not appear to be pink….more like creamy in colour….this is the reason why I nowadays prefer looking at photos rather than the sketches in my guide…or I suppose I should just get myself a guide with photos in.

Here are a pair of scalyfeathered finches at the entrance to their nest. I saw them along the dunes road from Twee Rivieren to the Auob in February 2010.

Tx PL,

I was battling with this one. In my one book it doesn't show or mention a red beak on the finch...why didn't I check the other book first! :slap:

So then this is a first for me!!

I was fortunate enough to do some birding in Mokala NP on Monday. We had an amazing day with some great sightings, but by far the most abundant species were the scaly-feathered finches! What a beautiful little bird!!

Lovely photo Bosnimf -

The Scaly-Feathered Finch is a pretty little bird.
