Glad to see that you're still lurking and reading Johan, and not disappeared. GREAT shot. Yours as well Yolandé - seems I needs to do some driving around...

So now I can agree with JvR about Marievale as Rail hotspot. They were not only calling all over the place but also showing well ( with lost of patience of course)
These were taken on the causeway - sat next to this one for nearly 13 minutes while he was preening himself.

And this one was walking infront of the Hadeda hide, quickly disappeared when he saw me walking in, but after a few minutes of silence he came slowly walking from the one side to the other, in full view.

Hi there,
According to my bird book this an African Rail. Friends of mine who know much more about birds than I do, tell me that this is quite a rare sighting as it is quite shy. I took this pic in WCNP.
My question; how rare is this sighting and is it a bird that is commonly or regularly seen in other parts of the country?

The bird itself is not rare, and neither is the sighting..it is how ever a bird that one hears more often then they see it, and sightings are often very brief and consist of a lot of reeds in between the bird and ones eye  seeing one so clearly and getting such a good photo is something to be proud of

This one popped out of a bush at the WCNP in March briefly before taking fright and diving back in.
