Dear Birders,
Please take note that this topic is regularly “cleaned” by moving the posts of a specific bird that has been positively ID-ed to the specific bird topic for all to use when trying to ID their bird sightings, and also to read all the interesting discussions about the birds while ID-ing them.
Should it be impossible for anybody to give a positive ID for a bird for some reason or another, it will be taken out, because it serves no purpose.
Go to Index to Birds Index to Birds and find the topic of the bird you are looking for.

Those small brown birds so many of us battle to identify, affectionately named Little Brown Jobs or LBJs for short by birders, can really be a pain especially if you want to increase the bird sightings list of your last trip.

Use this area to post photos of those LBJs you find difficult to identify and maybe some of the forum members might be able to be of assistance.

Remember only LBJs here. If you need a raptor identified go here and for all other birds you can go here.

Another LBJ that I'm having difficuties with. Is this perhaps a pale flycatcher or (more likely?) an ashy flycatcher? :hmz: Seen in the tree over my bungalow (#95) at Skukuza in mid-November 2014.

Please confirm the ID for me. Pretty sure it is a spike-heeled lark but not yet comfortable enough to tick it off. We saw this bird on our farm on top of a koppie in the Eastern Freestate close to Vrede. At first thought it was an eastern long-billed lark with the longish bill but this bird had a very scalloped back which is why we then thought spike-heeled. I know they usually occur in groups but because of the long grass we could not see the other birds - although there were others around including red-capped larks which we could id.

Hi there, you are spot on with Spike Heeled Lark. The white throat and rufous belly is a good indicator.

I'm thinking that these two birds are both rattling cisticolas, but I'm not 100% certain :hmz: Both seen along the S128 near Lower Sabie in mid-November 2014 (on a very overcast day).
