Another that I need help with I think that it may be a juvenile of some sort? But I have no idea what sort! Seen at Intaka Island (Century City), Cape Town, on 16 November 2012.

At first I thought it was a Cape Weaver who got dipped in oil. But more likely to be an immature Common Starling.

There is some indication of a whitish throat.

Weird bird. Do you have more photos of it? The pale'ish eye bugs me a bit.

Thanks WTM. I'd also thought possibly a juvenile starling, but I was thinking wattled? Unfortunately I only have one other photo of this bird and I'm not sure it's much further help. Definitely a weird bird!

I don't see any presence of a pale rump, which would rule out Wattled Starling.

Juvenile pale-winged starling possibly? (rather looks like the juvenile indicated in the Oberprieler & Cillié photo guide.

I really don't know the Cape all that well, but I would think that where arks saw the bird may be out of range for Pale-winged Starling.

I didn't take note of the specific location before - just remembered "Cape"

In any case after googling "common starling juvenile", and seeing lots of birds looking exactly like this one, I'm convinced that it is indeed a common starling
