Location: Swaziland. The smallest country of the S. Hemisphere
This was actually my 20,000th post, and wonderful JenB has asked me to post it here too. It is a true story, happened last week in fact, so I hope that you enjoy it.
Let me introduce myself, my name is Lilly, and I am a young Lesser Striped Swallow.
My Mum and Dad flew a long long way, (from somewhere in North Africa), to come back to the same place that they had made their home last summer. It was a beautiful home, in Malkerns, Swaziland, a tiny little country in Sunny Southern Africa, where the weather was turning warm again. Their home was in a corner of this large verandah, protected from all weather, and last year they managed, I believe, to raise two lots of little babies. They were very happy here, and the family that lived there left them alone and were good and kind to them.
This year they again returned to their home, only to find that the bottom had fallen out of their house.
They had many site meetings about there broken house whilst perched on the back of some funny white chairs which were on the verandah. Two strange little creatures, who make lots of noise, both happy and crying ones, were living there as well as two big creatures. They left my Mum and Dad alone whilst Mum and Dad had their site meetings, and so Mum and Dad decided to start rebuilding their old house. There was lots and lots of mud around, Mum told me, so they managed to redo their house in only a few days.
My very first memory was of being in this tiny enclosed space, all cramped and squashed. But it was warm and I felt good. I grew day by day and one day this little space was just too small and I thought I must get out, so started tapping at the walls of this tiny enclosed space and suddenly there was lots of light, and so I kept my eyes tightly shut, I felt very naked and cold and so I snuggled into a big warm feathery thing, which turned out to be my Mum. There were two other little naked shapes, just like me, snuggling in to Mum too. I soon was told, by Dad this time, that they were called Lally and Lolly and that my name was Lilly.
Every day for about 3 weeks Mum and Dad would leave us alone for a little bit but always came back with some really good tasting little bits and pieces for us to eat. One day during this time there was a big big noise outside our nest and Mum and Dad were screeching and making a big fuss. They told us, later, that some other birds, (they called them the “white rumped swift devils”) were trying to take over our home, but brave Mum and Dad would not let them.
Lally, Lolly and I soon noticed that we had grown these warm things all over our bodies , feathers they were called, and then Dad said to us all, “Come on you three it’s time to learn to fly” and he pushed us out of our warm little home. I fell for a bit but soon discovered that if I spread my arms, and flapped them that I just floated through the air.
It was a wonderful feeling. But it was cold and wet things were falling from the sky. I shivered and made a dash back for home. Thank goodness I found it again.
The next afternoon I tried it again, and went a little further this time. Suddenly the wet stuff started coming harder and harder and the wind was not letting me move so well. I tried to make for home. Oh dear, where was home, I could not find it anywhere. I knew it was over there, but this big big thing was in my way.
Oh “how could I get there,” I thought. I suddenly saw an opening, and it looked warm and cosy inside, and I am sure that my home was through here.
I flew into the light, but no, could not get to our home. I felt very sad.
It was warm and dry though, so I decided that it was better to stay here for the night. It was a very very big place, and there were quite a few strange creatures there, little ones and big ones.
I found some tall things with red flowers on them and decided that this was a good place to sit. I was so tired by now, that I tucked my head under my wing and fell fast asleep.
Next morning one of the big creatures walked past me and I woke up and looked around. Suddenly there was an opening and I could see trees and the sky.
I quickly flew out of this big warm place and saw Mum and Dad and Lally and Lolly, who were flying around looking for me. I was so happy that I had found my family again and that they could show me where my house was.
