Great news for all those peeps who so desperately wanted to join us for this year's BBW in KNP, but couldn't make it for whatever reason... The Stiffnecks have secured a weekend at Punda Maria Camp (4 - 6 Feb 2011). Punda is a small camp and can only cater for 28 participants. Punda ia also (arguably) the best birding venue in the country. So, if you want to go, send me a PM with your email addy ASAP and I will let you have all the necessary info to take it further.

I will keep you guys and gals up to date regarding progress with bookings.

No more PMs please.

We are already overbooked and some peeps will face disappointment already.

It seems as if we would have filled up 40 spots quite easily. Unfortunately Punda can only take 28...

“EARLY BIRD” CALL

Please be advised that bookings for our 2011 event will open on 15 July 2010. We would like to afford everyone the same opportunity to book for the camp of their choice so any bookings sent before 08h00 on 15 July 2010 will be returned to guests for re-submission on the official opening date and time. Requests will be dealt with in the order that they are received. (08h00 instead of 00h00 is to give those who only have access to e-mail at work equal opportunity.)

Next year we are offering three weekends and the details are as follows:

1st Weekend : 28 to 30 January 2011
Berg en Dal, Crocodile Bridge, Letaba, Lower Sabie, Mopani, Punda Maria, Satara, Shingwedzi, Talamati*

2nd Weekend : 4 to 6 February 2011
Bateleur*, Orpen, Satara, Shimuwini*, Sirheni*, Skukuza,

3rd Weekend : 11 to 13 February 2011
Shingwedzi, Pretoriuskop, Talamati *

*Bookings for Talamati, Bateleur Shimuwini & Sirheni must be for a minimum of 3 nights and must include Thursday. Guests will be charged for Thursday night’s booking at the relevant SANParks rate. Bush camps have 4-bed bungalows so bookings must be for a minimum of 4 guests, and thereafter in multiples of 4.

The cost of the event is R1650.00 per person for standard rest camps and R1800.00 for bush camps*. This includes two nights shared accommodation, two dinners and approximately 8-12 hours bird viewing / game drives.

We are happy to make bookings on your behalf for any additional nights required, (unfortunately only nights before the event). You will be charged at the relevant SANParks standard rate. Simply complete the section on the booking form, giving as much detail as possible. We kindly ask that you make your requirements known at this stage, because it is very difficult to secure additional bookings later.

Whilst every attempt will be made to place you in the camp of your choice, please note that this cannot be guaranteed.

Please complete the attached booking form and return it by email to westrandbirders@gmail.com. Remember to save the form and send it to us – do not simply reply to this email.

Unfortunately we no longer accept telephonic bookings but you are welcome to contact Monika on 084 304 3017 if you have any questions.

Reminder that booking opens on 15 July 2010!!!

We have had two persons withdraw from the Punda 2011 BBW. If you want to go, send me a PM. Remember... it is first come first serve...

This event takes place 4 - 6 February.

The cost of the event is R1650.00 per person. This includes two nights shared accommodation, two dinners and more than 12 hours bird viewing / game drives at times in areas not accessible to the general public, in the care of a birding expert with in-depth knowledge of the Punda-area birds.

"Break a leg!" is a call actors and stage performers make to wish each other good luck. Not so for birders. When a birder breaks a leg, it means someone else will have to go in his stead! That is exactly what happened to Sky! He tore ligaments in his ankle on Saturday. Two other Stiffie BBW spots also became available just about at the same time for different reasons and by Monday afternoon these spots were filled before I could go "public". Just shows how popular the Stiffie BBWs have always been and still are.

We will have four specialists to show us around and to help find those elusive specials. They are Tertius Gouws, Don English, Richard Sowry and Chris Patton. Which team gets which expert will be decided on later.  I guess the experts first want to check out the clientele!

We have divided the 28 Stiifies into four teams: The GREEN team is made up by Yolandé Oelsen; Mary de Wijn; Martie de Wijn; Francois Dreyer; Magdeline Dreyer; Steyn Joubert en Leon Venter.

The PURPLE team - Thomas Hohls; Pierre Homan; Leon Keulder; Johan Keulder; Janice Isom; Mike Isom and Alison Hanson.

The BLUE team - Eugene van der Walt; Annelize van der Walt; Jaques de Villiers; Heindrich Human; Danie van den Bergh; Dirk Human and Elaine Fisher.

The RED team - Martie Krog; Rita Vincent; Lizet Grobbelaar; Johann Grobbelaar; Johan van Rensburg; Samuel Janse van Rensburg and Andre Graham.

I take it all are keenly looking forward to this event. I certainly am (just 13 sleeps...)

Then you can go round and around... and around... and see all the birds in the parking area.

How could you put me with that bunch of nutheads Johan? If they talk half the nonsense they do on the forums, I will need a week in Kruger alone just to recover!

On the other hand, we will prob have all the fun, and we get to meet (the now notorious)WTM!
See you have assembled yourself a seriously good team!

Looking forward. You mentioned that you are in Northern Kruger from 2Feb. Where? We will be in Punda from the 2nd.

BTW, Stiffies... there are two deadlines not to be missed:
1 - Event Registration Friday 15h00 at the “Sasol Lapa”
2 - Friday 17h30 gathering at “Sasol Lapa” to depart for the Pennant-winged Nightjar Adventure

If you are in time for these, you will automatically feed into the rest of the schedule. Unless, if you oversleep and miss the 02:00 wake-up call on Saturday

Oh, I guarantee you are going to have most funtabulous time!

Have a good look, Eugene... all four teams are seriously GOOD! This is by far the best birding experience ever asembled in a single camp!

We (Martie, Rita, Sammy, André and I) are staying in Letaba the 2nd. We will pitch at Punda late on Thursday as we intend a slow rise north...

It is, however, a great idea for all the early Stiffies to get together for dinner Thurdsday evening. We must just decide what format the evening must be... a long restaurant table or maybe a bring-and-braai...

Anyone with other suggestions?
