Hi everybody,
in November I´m back to KNP and one of the birds that is highly on my wish list is the Southern Red Bishop. I have never seen one in nature but I´ve seen some very nice pics :cam: Could anybody give me some advice where to look out for this beautiful bird?

I've never seen one in Kruger, sorry. Perhaps others have.

I associate them more with open farmlands. I've seen plenty of them up in Zimbabwe on our friend's farm (which they are about to get kicked off, after having survivied all the problems of the last 10 years or so).

It's truly a beautiful little bird to see. Good luck!

Thanks Tony Park,
according to the book "Best Birding in Kruger" there should be a chance to see them at Lake Panic, but I don´t know if November is a good month :hmz:
I´m also going to St. Lucia and the parks around, so hopefully I get them somewhere

I've also never seen a red bishop in KNP and agree with Tony about more open farmland. I saw my very first ones where I stay in Darling, so I'd say that the West Coast / Western Cape is a good area for seeing them.

Gauteng is a great place to find them. We have a breeding pair in our garden. He's a bit grey at the moment but he's still around. They do tend to stick to farmland and human habitation. The can be pesky at a feeding table. If you self-drive to KNP keep eyes peeled between Johannesburg and the Middelburg area. I've seen them next to the road but then they have to be in breeding colours.

Went on a bird count on Saturday up the west coast and saw quite a few, especially females.

Seen them twice, both times from the restaurant deck at Lower Sabie towards river in the reeds. Too far for decent photos but easy seen with bins.

Set for my second trip Sept. this year and my fourth in 3 years, why did it take me so long to find heaven.
