A recent posting by PNF on their trip report includes a photo of a Hornbill with a deformed beak that was seen at Shingwedzi rest camp.

I was concerned when I saw the photo, as I have seen similar deformities on birds here on the Pacific coast of North America, mostly Raptors and Passerines including Chickadees and Tits. This malady is known as Bad Beak Disease or Long Beak disease. The scientists that are studying it, are not sure of the cause. They have had reports from around the world, including another report from South Africa.

With PNF's permission, I forwarded this photo to the Biologists who are investigating this troubling phenomenon and they believe that it could be related.

I have been asked to put the word out and ask forum members to report sightings of birds with deformed beaks, and I have volunteered to pass information and photos on to the scientists to assist in their research.

I don't know if this post is acceptable on the Sanparks forum, but hope that forum members will report any sightings, with date, location and photos if possible.

Thank you.

Hi

I saw this Shingwedzi resident in late March this year. I put a photo and comment on this bird under the topic "Southern Yellowbilled Hornbills " (I think I got the species wrong! and it is redbilled) and I know that Crested Barbet has the full story in a report. I was impressed with how well the bird was coping with feeding itself on termites it dug from a tree.
