I know it's frowned at about posts not in a N.P. but i just have to share this, and it so close to KNP it's "virtually a N.P. I was having coffee this morning on our deck when i saw something in a tree nearby, which turned out to be a pair of AGP actually building a nest. In the photo(sorry about quality) one can see, i assume, the male giving the female a twig which she then places.

On the Mahonie loop outside Punda I found this AGP feeding on some white berry in spite of a fig tree full of ripe fruit being close by... suggesting that sometimes there are preference variations in the bird's diet.

Can someone tell me why there is such colour variation in these birds.
Is it due to their diet?

Took the following picture of the African Green-Pigeon close to Berg-en-Dal.

The following is the same picture, which I just enlarged to make it easier to spot the green pigeon.

While we watched these birds, a car with people from Texas (from the accent :D ) pulled up and we showed them these birds. At that moment my Afrikaans to English translation failed and I told them about the Parrot-Dove.

So here are the photos of the new specie called the "Parrot Dove".

Wildman and Nannie, we also see the green pigeons in Pretoria North, love them!! They eat the figs and "moerbye" (help, what is "moerby" in english?)

I have rescued one the road a while ago and took it to Onderstepoort Veteranry Institute. They where very surprised to see one as they are becoming very rare in Pretoria due to the fact that all the small holdings that used to have lots of fruit trees are being developed for yet more complexes. The man that came to fetch it for rehabilitation also called it a "roomys duifie" (ice cream pigeon).

If it is any comfort, they seem to have expanded their range into JHB (No idea why :hmz: ). I have heard of several independent sightings, including this picture of them demolishing my mulberies in my Orchards garden.

That's great to hear, and I live quite close to Orchards, so hopefully they'll find their way to my garden soon too.

Here is a pic I took on a recent visit to the Kruger.

Last Friday, this African Green Pigeon flew into my workshop here in Pretoria North during lunch time and sat around for an hour or so. Awesome to see one up close, they are just stunning!

He started flying around not finding the door and Skillie gently cought him when he flew in behind some boxes and released him outside.

There is a lot of fruit trees in the surrounding gardens and from time to time we spotted one or two in the next-nextdoor neighbours mull berry tree.

A couple of days ago a whole swarm sat in a dead tree next to our garden in Pretoria North, never have I seen so many together.
