Hi there pnm, I can really tell you that I understand how you feel with the confusion with the chats.. particularly in that area.

Myself and Wildtuinman, went birding in the Karoo NP last year June and we had a helluva time trying to turn Familiar Chats into Sickle Winged Chats..

It is very difficult to at first glance notice the difference, but as you noted, that if you wait long enough then you will see that little wagtail like tail whip. Not saying the Sickle Winged doesn't wag its tail, but certainly not an ID'able factor as far as Roberts is concerned..
Something we also picked up was the fact that Familiar chats are considerably darker underneath than the other chats. Karoo chat is very pale grey to white underneath where as you can see on all your pics except number 3 that all the birds show a very buffy brownish colour, much like the rest of his body. Karoo Chat is also very quickly taken out of the equation here as they have distinct outer white tail feathers..

Based on distribution alone I would almost rule out both the Karoo and Sickle Winged Chats (just just on the edge of their distribution range I think) and would say that all your chats are indeed Familiar chats.

Josh, Bird 10 is a Familiar Chat as is Bird 5 (especially since you say it flicked it's tail a lot - good ID feature)

Most of your ID's are correct. Bird 5 is a Familiar Chat (especially since you say it flicked it's tail a lot - good ID feature)

I believe I have a resident Familiar chat in the vicinity of my property. I have identified it as such because it often raises its tail and flicks its wings. However I stand to be corrected.

What I would like to know if it characteristic of this bird to always go to bed late and wake up early. I have got used to this chat coming ‘home’ at almost dark and tweeting at about 4am. I take exception when it starts tweeting at around 2am. I often see the bird perched on my air-conditioning unit outside my bedroom.

I am sorry, I don’t have a photograph.
