Marakele: Lions

Unread postby Evel » Sun Jun 30, 2013 5:27 pm

I just spend a great weekend at Tlopi camp. We heard lions calling Saturday evening and this morning. We went looking for them and saw the paw prints on the road. I was just wondering if anybody has had any sightings of the Marakele lions to share with us? Has anybody ever seen them from Tlopi camp?

We have been to Marakele as day visitors and have never seen or heard any lions. Good news that you have heard lions roar from Tlopi Camp Evel. Maybe it is a sign that the lion population in Marakele is on the increase?

Glad that you saw the pawprints as well. I know there is a predator park right next to th entrance of Marakele. At first I thought it (the calls) might be from there. Only been to Marakele as day visitors, love the place. Never saw any lions though.

Stayed at Tlopi a couple of weeks ago and also heard lions roaring - very close to us! Saw pawprints not far from our car................ So the roars definitely did not come from the predator park.............
But actually see the lions? No :(

We have stayed at Marakele three times and never actually seen lion.

In February this year we stayed at Motswere Guest House and heard lion roar close by one night. The next day we saw tracks on the 4 x 4 road leading to the house.

Finally!

We visited Marakele for the first time a week ago for 2 nights. After having read this thread and many trip reports I told my SO NOT to expect any lions. Nobody ever sees them! :naughty: They just hear them and see their tracks...

Well - good for us - our expectations were wrong...

We stayed at Tlopi camp. On Sunday afternoon, we decided not to stay out too late driving, but enjoy the last hour of the day on our deck overlooking the dam. At about 17:00, while sitting there, we heard the warning calls of the Crested Francolins across the dam... :hmz: My hubby looked up and saw him - a beautiful male lion!

Image

I grabbed the camera to get the proof - not the best pictures - as it was across the dam, and behind a few bushes - but believe me - this was a truly magnificent looking lion! 8)

Image

We hoped and prayed that he would come to the water to drink, but it was not to be... :| Well, we thought, we saw a Marakele lion - that doesn't happen often apparently!

We were still standing on the deck looking and hoping that he'll maybe come out into the open again, when we heard a car at the entrance of our tent. The vehicle had a yellow ribbon tied to it! I thought it was a forumite who noticed our yellow ribbon, and I started walking to the car to introduce myself. Immediately the occupants indicated to me not to come and to go back to the deck... :hmz: "Lions!" they shouted, "20m from here - be careful!" It was Nina! Apparently as they drove to their tent - they saw 3 females and 1 male lying close to the entrance. We immediately grabbed our car keys and went to go and have a look. They were no longer at the site where Nina! found them, but we were lucky to find a female walking in the bushes - and before we knew it she layed down in a clearing! :D

Image

Wow - another beautiful lion!

Image

She seemed quite calm and allowed me to take many :cam:

Image

Image

Even a bit of yawning...

Image

As the sun started setting she started staring in one direction, she then got up and started calling the others! :D

Image

All the time they must have lied just a few metres from her, deeper in the bush - and we never knew, but as she called them a young maned lion got up and followed her...

Image

....as well as a collared lioness.

Image

How close was this to camp? A photo to show those of you who know Tlopi camp exactly how close. In the front right corner of the photo is the turn-off to the last 4 tents (including ours - Heron), and in the upper left corner is the lioness:

Will hopefully get time to write a detailed TR soon...
