Hi

Can anyone give me some advice in regards to the road condition travelling from Roodepoort to Marakele please.

Go through Brits, Thabazimbi, some bad patches but we did it in a golf.

Dunno about the "mining situation"though.

Maybe slightly longer - but I recommend N1 up to Bela Bela (Warmbaths). Then R516/R511 to Thabazimbi.

Brits - Thabazimbi is most boring though mining areas and lots of villages. The road also have some serious potholes, have seen several cars standing next to the road with more than one flat tire. :wall:

N1 to Bela Bela is also not very interesting but at least in good condition. The R516 part from Bela Bela is quite nice going though Game Farms and Nature Reserves, we have seen everything from Sable to Rhino along the road on that drive. Besides that, although narrow-ish the road is in great condition with very limited traffic once past the Zebula/Mabula turn off.

All the best, Michael

Road between Brits and Thabazimbi quite good. Most potholes patched with tar. Just note it could change drastically again in the next few weeks, but for now is OK.

Have to agree with Great Dane here. N1 to Bela Bela and left towards Thabazimbi is not as challenging as Brits to Thabazimbi.

It's a little longer via Bela Bela (About a 3.5 hour trip from JHB on a Friday afternoon), but the road is in a much better condition.

I've just realized that I'm getting withdrawals and am going to have to make a plan to go back. I hear anteaters abound in winter and will have to go on a photo hunt for one....

Cheers

Dear All,

I also prefer the Bela Bela route, although Bela Bela Leeupoort section is narrow and carries quite heavy traffic, road condition fine though. I usually turn off to Rooiberg from where road is gravel and joins the tar road near the park gate. Gravel road is not too bad, a bit scruffy in some areas. So if you have a robust vehicle try that out as an alternative, cuts out a lot of traffic close to Thabazimbi.

Kind regards.
