We are planning Mapungubwe late August/early Sept. to visit the historical sites. Can we get there from Jhb in a 1 day drive or stop over along the way, Where? Are 2 nights enough before going to Kruger? How many historical sites are in the Mapungubwe area and how much time should we allot? Near Pafuri? Is it possible to get from Vhembe wilderness camp to Punda M in a day ? Where could we stay in between?
Thank you all for the much need advice.

It will be drivable in one day from Joburg, also possible to drive from Mapangubwe to northern Kruger area in one morning.I wouls give Mapangubwe 2 days to explore, then move on. My personal opinion though.

I agree with FG.

Mapungubwe needs a minimum of two full days in the park to explore. That translates to a minimum of three nights.

Do the guided visit to Mapungubwe hill. It is worth it.

Sadly, many of the other historical and archaeological sites are not accessible at the moment. But we are working on it ...

Special places include the tree top walk, the confluence and the 4x4 route.

To me Mapungubwe is the jewel in the crown of all SANParks .... it is unique and special. And Vhembe camp is unique.
