Hello everyone,

I will be going to Marakele NPark in December with my 17 years daughter from Switzerland.

As we have never been there, I was wondering if anybody could provide us with some recommendations, tips and things not to miss in Marakele. We love taking pictures of wild animals and particularly of birds.

We will be staying in Tlopi tent camp.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Best regards from Switzerland :D :D

A very warm welcome to you, Swissbird :gflower: I do hope that you have a brilliant stay.

I am posting links to a couple of recent trip reports that might give a sense of what you might be looking for.

Thank you very much for the links, now I cannot wait anymore to be there….

One question related to Marakele, according to what I understand through reading, the park is splitter into to pieces, one being safe to walk (no big predators) and one being the home of lions ?

We are going to stay at Tlopi tent camp, so I guess over there it may be dangerous to walk out of the tents ???

Hi Swissbird
Marakele is a great park that offers fantastic birding, wildlife and scenery. The Tlopi Tented Camp is indeed located in the side of the park with predators and elephants. I got quite a surprise when the lions woke us with roaring nearby and I got a leopard meters away from our unit on a camera trap. You can read about it HERE
Don't let the predators put you off, but walking around is not advised. Enjoy

Hello Waterbuck,

Thanks a lot for your great links, reading your travel report was a real pleasure all the way from Switzerland.

And as not being very familiar with lions and leopards, we will be very carefull at Tlopi tents…..

Best regards,

Swissbird - welcome to the Forums.

You will love Marakele. We have stayed at Tlopi Tented Camp a few times and have had lovely sightings from our tent. We have had elephants very close to the tent, too.

The Tlopi Camp is not fenced, so any animals can enter the camp and get close to the tents - we once found elephant dung right by our vehicle! You should be careful walking too far from your tent and have a good look around before walking from tent to vehicle.

Although the Park is divided into two and the lions and elephants are in the eastern section, you are not allowed to leave your vehicle when driving around in either part of the Park, except at designated places - i.e. the Camping Ground, the picnic area and the bird hide. Wild animals are, normally, used to vehicles but very nervous of humans once they leave the vehicle and walk. People walking will upset the animals and other visitors who are trying to look at them.

I'm not sure if Marakele Park offers guided walks. Several other SANParks do offer them and it is a great way to experience the bush "up close and personal" - looking at plants, foot prints etc. The guided walks are usually in areas away from the tourist roads, so other tourists are not disturbed. Maybe look at the information pages for Marakele Park and see if a walk might be an option.

Have a wonderful trip!

Marakele do offer guided walks.

Enquire at the reception.

It is something I can recommend.

Thanks to everyone for the nice answers.
Regarding the cape vultures, is there a specific place where pictures of the birds can be taken ?
Have a great week end,

Hi Swissbird,

Read all about Marakele by making use of the "Index" Here.

We will also visit Marakele from 14-17 Oct 2014 for the first time and will report back when we return from Kruger by the 25th  .

Hi Swissbird :)

The vulture colony can be found on the cliffs of Kransberg in Marakele, as well as circling above it. I'm very jealous of your trip!!

Hi Swissbird,

For the best view of the vultures, be at the top of the mountain early in the morning and wait for them to take flight. They take off from their nesting sites which are at the back of the mountain but they circle past at eye level and very close at times.

Enjoy Marakele!
It's a very special place! :)
