Marakele: Sightings 2013

Unread postby Nina! » Tue Aug 13, 2013 10:42 am

Hi there,

Does anybody have an update regarding sightings in Marakele?
And how is the general situation? I have seen posts that last year around this time, it had been extremely dry.

Would be great to have some news from this park.
We will visit beginning of October for the first time.

Would also like to know how Marakele is doing! :D
We were there last year in September and it was the driest that we have ever seen the Park! :( Really hope this year is better.
We are planning a visit to Bontle in December.

No news yet but with a bit of luck I will have something to post on Monday. Heading off to do the 4x4 Eco Trail this weekend.

According Getaway Magazine you are almost guarantied to see the big 5 on this trail. Doubt that very much but as always in the bush something will walk past the lens at some stage.

Can't wait, Michael :yaya:

I've been in Marakele for 2 days last August.
We sighted rhinos twice: 1) two of them, one younger (not baby) 2) one quite close to the road.
Both sighting were very close to the road.

We also sighted kudu, wildbeest, zebra, nyala, ostrich, warthog, impala, giraffe, waterbuck.

It was kind of like shooting fish in a barrel so Connor could probably have also taken these :))))

Awesome venue for photographing so really tame species.

We visited Marakele beginning of October for 4 days.

We saw rhinos, impalas, kudus, bushbucks, wildebeests, zebras, warthogs, ostriches, giraffes, banded mongoose, vervet monkeys, baboons, geese, grey kingfisher, rock monitors. Except for rhinos, all the animals could be seen from the terrace of Tlopi tented camp.

We did not see any elephants BUT one day, returning from a drive, 3 lions blocked the way to our tent :D
It was 1 male and 2 females.

Birding was good on the hill where the viewpoint is.

We loved being at Marakele.
