Today arrived back from Mapungubwe. The western section is lush and green. Flowers and grass everywhere. Main section also gorgeously green. Had a lovely thundershower at Leokwe yesterday late afternoon.
Travelling from Mussina, The Weipe road has been closed by the owner. We were two cars, turned away by armed guards blocking the road near the farm. To reach the Park from Mussina, after the Beitbridge turnoff onto the R572, take the first tar road left, after the houses, it reads - Alldays. A perfect 100km with no potholes. After the Venetia Diamond Mine is a dirt road to the right that reads Pondrif. We carried on straight to the R521, T-junction 22km north of Alldays.
Maloutswa Hide is closed and under water. The walk way has been completely washed to the side and is still under water. The parking area’s gate is under water.
The Maloustwa pan stretches for a kilometre if not more to both sides of the hide. I’ll upload some photos later. It’s sad to see the hide in the middle of the water and under water. Will take a long while for the water to clear up. The drive next to the river now is mostly sand washed in from the river and is open.
A bridge on the Den Staat road, near the LFTC gate, has washed away. A small temporary road is available.
The tree top walk is open most of the way, up to the short section going to the hide. The hide has been damaged. The river road to the Vembe turn off is difficult going at some small sections near the water holes. Repairs are on going.
Mapungubwe is beautiful with the most birdlife we’ve ever seen and the scenery a feast for the eyes. Lions are seen regularly in the Western section and we heard lion at night at Leokwe as well. However the elephants have gone
. We saw one lonely bull in eight days. Never the less it was a wonderful experience and well worth the visit
