There is a rhythmic trrr-trrr sound that one hears often in the forests of the Garden Route parks. I've heard it walking on the trails around Ebb & Flow, and Knysna, and Storms River. I've thought that it might be a frog, but cannot identify it.

I've made a recording that you can listen to here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/1690126/record ... eCreek.mp3 (727.4kB file)

I can identify the Common River Frog (the t-t-t-t-t-oooiiir) but it's the rhythmic slightly metalic trr-trr trr-trr that you can hear in the background that puzzles me - it might even be an insect, I suppose.

Recording was made on a warmish sunny day at the first picnic spot at Jubilee Creek, I was about 30m from a stream and about 500m north of the picnic place itself - you can hear children and a car door in the distance.

Hi bosneus,

sounds like some sort of cricket to me.

Definitely not a frog or bird I have heard about before.

Hi wildtuinman

Thanks for the listen and the reply!

Next time I am there (May, hopefully) I'll try to sneak up on the source of the sound to figure out what it is.
