:D
Hallo GlynB!
We stayed over @ Karoo Nat Park 3 weeks ago.
What a wonderful reception! All the staff were very friendly and helpful
As soon as we entered the Park, we saw lots of antelopes.
We decided to go to the picnic area for some coffee.(Doornhoek)
We were still in the picnic area when we heard a loud ROAR!
We were very lucky to hear and then saw a big Lion.
He walk in front of our car for about 3 km. Towards Afsaal turnoff.
That night , rather early the next morning , we were surprised to hear two lions close to camp.
Maybe it was the first time.
A truly wonderful stay.
Hope you find it as exiting and rewarding as we did. :D

The two were released just over a month ago and both are doing fine. The one was spotted yesterday along the Lammertjiesleegte loop, while the other one moved into the western section of the Park and linked up with one of the older lionesses.

The one male made a kill a few weeks ago next to the rest camp, opposite chalet no 23 and did not attempt to challenge the electric fence line around the rest camp. It seems as if they are settling down after their first “escape”. We will never know what triggered their previous escape but it may have something to do with the presence of the two dominant males that forced them into the eastern section of the Park and they tried to escape from the two older males.

It seems now as if each one of them chose an unoccupied section of the Park with fewer pressure from the other two dominant males.

I'm struggling to upload pics here, hence the unavailability thereof. My apologies. As soon as I've found the problem, you'll have some.

Thanks for the feedback FrontierPR

After reading the latest news broadcast about the snow in the park, and the fact that we will be there in the next 3 weeks, how are the lions coping with the snowy conditions? :hmz:

The Park only had very light snow on the upper mountains and the winter so far is not as extreme as the previous winter. It doesn’t look as if the cold weather is bothering them at all. They are definitely more active in winter than in summer and are also catching more prey.

Wow! A lion on Lammertjiesleegte Loop. Now that is worth seeing. Also good spot for food, with large numbers of zebras, haartebest, rhebok and springbok.

OMW.....
We feel so privileged to have seem him!!!! We were in the park for one night on the 8th and saw him on Lammertjiesleegte Loop :D
We watched him for ages while a Red Hartebeest watched him too, until he was so "spooked' and ran off at high speed. It appears he had killed a Hartebeest which we could not see in the long grass , perhaps that's why the Hartebeest was so stressed? He seemed to be dragging it to a better position before starting to feed on it.
Went to look for him on the morning of the 9th before leaving the park but with no success.

Heavily cropped so you can see his beauty :D You too can see blood on the side of his mane.

Last time there was a prize for the first forumite to submit pics of the newly released lions. A nights accomodation to come back and enjoy the beautiful park! How happy would I be if that was the case this time   Very happy!! :D
Coincidentally we stayed in Chalet no 23 on the 8th, think I left my cell phone cover there so that's another good reason to have to go back  Such a stunning park

I was at Karoo NP yesterday, and did not see a lion, but the guys at the gate said one young Kgalagadi male is spending most of his time close to the entrance gate on the first loop around Bulhoek? picnic site. He was seen there on Thursday am, but we missed him in the pm.
The rest of the lions were apparantly near Sandrivier, but I was pressed for time, so missed them too. At least there are now 2 separate "groups" of lions, which doubles the chances of seeing them!
Where are the cheetahs?

God bless,
