We were recently in MZP and had the good fortune to have the two males all to ourselves at very close range! They are indeed looking very good.

One interesting thing (to us, anyway) was the distance they cover each 24 hours. We saw them at the Weltevredekloof picnic site (5 meters outside the fence!) at 5.30 p.m. - the next morning they were reported to be up the top of the Kranskop Loop - the following morning (6.10 a.m.)I saw them beside the main access road, near the beginning of the Umgeni 4x4 track (I later heard they had crossed the road and gone up the 4x4 track). That is quite a distance travelled, including going up one of the mountains.

We did not see the female, though a staff member did say she had been around the Doornhoek Dam area one day.

We visited MZP park yesterday and saw the the two male lions!

We watched them for about an hour. They slept the entire time. Lol. But it was totally worth it.

Hoping to visit again soon.

Spent a night at MZP on the 22nd of Dec and LOVED it! Its a precious little gem of a park. And on our departure, about 500m from the gate, we saw a lone lioness. Some distance in but atleast we could watch her for about 30 mins.

Greetings from Mountain Zebra Park!

My name is Charl Lyell and I have taken over Michael's position in Mountain Zebra. I will keep you posted from time to time on the lions in MZNP.

The two males and the female have been doing very well and are often seen by guests and on guided drives. The two males in particular have grown a lot and their manes are coming along nicely. The female are seen from time to time in their company but mostly prefers to do her own thing. They seem to favour the areas along the Wilgerboom River, Rooiplaat and on the 4x4 trails. All three have been in the vicinity of the Rest Camp and guest house in the past 3 days. The female killed an adult eland close to the Doornhoek dam by the guesthouse on the past weekend. It seems that the 2 males also killed something in the thicket along the main road just before the Rest Camp.

Hi Charl,

Very good to hear from you. Thanks. We love getting good news from our own parks in the Cape provinces!

God bless,

Friedrich von Horsten
