I believe the little cubs were spotted in a river bed where one turns off the Nuweveld 4x4 trail towards Embizweni.

Karoo National Park Activity Sightings

Unread postby falsebay » Mon Apr 29, 2013 1:11 pm

Just had a great trip to Karoo NP. Not sure if it is a record but we saw 3 aardwolf during an evening drive. The last one was just inside the camp fence near the fossil displays. Karoo NP must rate as one of the best parks in SA.

We were in the park for 14 nights (12 - 26 May) recently. Although we did not see lions on our few trips doing the 4x4 routes, two of our "neighbours" saw lions. Two females were seen by Nols & Willa Volschenk near the Embizweni turn-off on 22 May. And a male and two females were seen at Kookfontein (old farm yard) on 24 May. The couple who saw the lions at Kookfontein also found a brown hyena cub on the road from Kookfontein to Afsaal. The cub disappeared into an aardvark hole, but fortunately they could still take a photo of it. Rangers were very glad when they informed them about the hyena cub.

I hope to have better luck during my next visit (13 - 24 Sep).

I have not seen the cub myself, but according to the people who saw it, they thought it is a Spotted Hyena cub. The ranger, to whom they reported their sighting, told them that the Brown Heyna cub looks very similar to the Spotted Hyena cub. They could hardly believe the similarity of the cubs of the two different hyenas.

How I wish that I can see a Brown Hyena in Karoo on my next trip. I have never seen a Brown Hyena anywhere. We've been lucky to see lions in Karoo shortly after the first ones were released.

Stoffel, never mind what it looked like. It's just very exciting to have seen it :gflower:

We saw a brown hyena in Kruger in 1979 between shing and what is now Mopani, been going thru thousands of pics to try and find the pic of it but haven't found it yet These forum mites will only believe me once I have a pic to prove it, so the search continues

BB

You are correct - only Brown Hyena in Karoo. The guy who saw the cub did not know it and thought it is a Spotted cub they saw.
