Hi
I got stuck at the South Gate yesterday at 1735. I phoned the reception and they said the gate closes at 1730 which I found odd as I had been informed otherwise that same day by the staff at Colchester entrance.

They informed me it was 1800 when I checked, which I openly accepted, as this is what I was told the previous Monday and I had left that same gate at exactly 1800 then.
On the Monday I was still sitting near Spekboom after 1730 taking photo's of the lions. Exif data on the images confirms this. I exited through the South Gate thereafter.

Anyway, a bit the donner in I had to rush across the park to the main camp gate before 1800 to exit.
Just thought you should know that not everyone is reading from the same script at the moment.

Not all bad, on the way back I saw a whole bunch of younger ellies playing in that new furrow being dug near Marion Baree waterhole.
They were loving the soil that had been dug up and some were making the most of the opportunity by climbing into it and getting a good old dust bath going.
ciao

Hi grantm
Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

The south gate or addo heights gate should indeed close at 18h00. The gate times changed in the last week of August to accommodate the changing seasons.

We will investigate the matter to find out why the gate was closed early on last Saturday as this should not have happened.

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience!

Hi
Certainly no apology required, being the 'only' vehicle driving through the park at sunset was great, and a rare privilege indeed.

Seems to me that this is a common problem of miscommunication. :?
On one occasion I was told at the Main Entrance that the Addo Heights Gate closed at a specific time.
Reception gave a different time and on entering the Main Game section I was given a different time.
Granted this was before the new season times kicked in.
I enter and leave through the Matyholweni Gate often and there is no indication of Gate times as there is at the Main entrance. Perhaps this would alleviate the miscommunication of gate closing times.
Have a great day.

Hi GrantM and Apple
I must apologise, it's me who is now shame-faced
I decided to take this matter up again since there seems to be so much confusion...and found out that the Addo Heights gate does indeed close at 17h30! Please accept my apologies for not having the correct information on hand and adding to the confusion.

You will be happy to know that we are about to print new camp layout maps which will have this type of infomation on them so that there will be no confusion in the future.

Here are the correct times:
Main Game Area Gate - 1 Sept to 31 May: 06h00 to 18h00
1 June to 31 August: 06h30 to 17h30
Addo Heights Gate - 1 Sept to 31 May: 06h00 to 17h30
1 June to 31 August: 06h30 to 17h00

Hi Megan

Thank you for the information.
All is well for everyone as long as there is a clear and consistent message to avoid any mis-communication.
Thank you for taking the time to investigate and report back.
Much appreciated.

ciao
:)

Hi Gary1! The usual check-in time for SANParks is 12h00, with a checkout of 9h00. I think I remember Addo being the same, but I'm sure one of the regular visitors will be able to confirm/deny.

Thanks for all the replies.

I live about 6 hours away and intend to arive on a Fri evening. A 7pm check in time (latest that is) is pretty reasonable. The 12 noon check is certainly a civilised time.

Gary1 - a good idea if you expect to arrive in the evening is to make sure you have the contact number of the Park at hand in case you run into a snag and might just be arriving later than the 7pm gate closing time.

This happened to friends of ours at Bontebok NP, they had a major vehicle problem that caused a considerable delay and when we and they alerted the guys at reception - the SANParks guys waited up until late that evening and let them in. SANParks staff

The Addo main gate is manned between 19h00 and 07h00 - so I am sure if you do have a snag and will arrive late, but call ahead, a plan will be made to leave the key at the gate.

Good advice guys - thanks very much.

Planning on being there at the end of May - looking forward to it as I haven't been to Addo in many many many years.
