I read a newspaper article years ago where it was claimed that there are plans to expand MZNP dramatically and link it with Camdeboo and perhaps even Addo. It sounded to good to be true and I have not been able to find much on the subject since then.

The idea of a mini-Kruger in a restored Eastern Cape ecosystem is obviously very exciting to wildlife and nature enthusiasts like me. The economic benefits alone should also make it exciting for all stake holders.

Does anyone know if these plans are still on the table?

There is a little on this website about it - read here
Quote:
The vision for the future is ultimately to link the Camdeboo National Park with the Mountain Zebra National Park, protecting a huge diversity of plant and animal species. This will assist in the conservation of the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra. The idea is to create a single mega-conservation area over 120km in length and including up to 520 000 hectares of land under conservation and this will be accomplished in the main by public/private partnerships.

This is great news. Sanparks seems to be really working on their conservation plans, and deserves a

Great news indeed. Imagine a truly genetically sustainable Eastern Cape lion population.

I still dont know why SANParks havent bought out East Cape Park's ? Why not incorporate teh baviaans kloof area, which contains buffalo, leopard, and black rhino already ? Would that also make sense ?

This, with the Camdeboo/MZNP would make it almost as big as Kgalgalaiagalagi whatsitsname ???

Then my "day" trips to addo would be in jeopardy....lol

Well done to Sanparks for its vision and partnerships

I hope threads like these will be read by people who have a jaundiced view of Sanparks. Conservation is so much more than what we see and experience.

That's great DB, thank you. I was aware that the table existed, but did not know where to find it.

I had heard that Sanparks was deep in negotiations about adding more land onto Mapungubwe, if so it would be great to know how things are progressing. I would love to see the western and eastern sides of the Park be more united.

It also needs to be stressed that this is not just a matter of obtaining more land. The land often has to be rehabilitated at great cost. Farming does leave scars.
