On the 5 o'clock news. A man, 64 year old, was killed by a buffalo while doing the 1km Imbila (spelling?) trail in Mountain Zebra National Park. Apparently 4 hikers were repeatedly attacked by a rogue buffalo, and a man from Somerset West died of his injuries. Rangers are presently looking for the buffalo.

That is sad news indeed , Buffs are really dangerous animals. I hope the other hikers are not too badly injured, for the families of the folk

Article in our local paper (on line)

What a tragedy :( Condolences to those loved ones of the hiker that died.

IF the article has quoted Megan correctly, and the hikers had just set off on the trail, that means this did not happen too far from the camp as the trail starts from the main camp.

But best not to speculate, lets wait until Megan can give us more details, or there is an official press release on this website.

Wow, this is a tragedy! I have done some of those walks, and it could easily happen to any one of us. I wonder what the implications for those trails will be?

Condolences to the family

Eish DB, no speculating about the death of a human. :? Sorry for the family, but this is one instance(With all respect to not only the family, but all those killed in nature, be it shark attack, elephant, hippo etc.) that should show us to tread warily, anything can happen.

My sincere condolences to those affected by the tragic death of this hiker. However I'm just as sad for the buffalo. We tend to forget that we are infringing on their territory and they are only acting as they were created. My dad and his friend were attacked in the Luangwa Valley in Zambia and his friend died from secondary infection. It's a huge animal, unbelievably strong and with very defensive instincts. Dad always said 'THE most dangerous animal in Africa' after his escapade. If anyone is at fault, it's humans for creating these 'walks in nature'. Very sad story from all sides, but the reality of us trying to interact with nature.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the trails/hikes have been an old feature of MZNP for many years, and are unaccompanied by rangers, as compared to Kruger for example...

Buffalo are relative newcomers to this Park, as the second big-5 addition, so maybe guides should now accompany traillists?

A terrible tragedy, and condolences to the loved ones.

Yes, unaccompanied. They lead off from the camp. The camp is not fenced. There are huge notices at the start of each of these trails warning people of the dangers.

There were buffalo in the Park when we visited as long ago as 2005.

This must have been just been a really freak accident. :(

Evening mites, what a terrible tragedy.

The hiker that was killed was one of my closest friends - we shared a flat in our bachelor days, and I was his best man some 39 years ago.

We are all a bit hazy regarding the details. His wife and the other couple have been taken to hospital in PE.

Once I have more specific details regarding their condition, I will post it here.

Billy
