We were in Graaff Reinet for the weekend and I popped into the Camdeboo NP - I spend as much time as I reasonable can in the Kgalagadi and couldn't help notice the difference in condition between Gemsbok in the two parks ... the few we saw in Camdeboo didn't seem to be in particularly good condition, all of the ones we saw had severe tick infestations, with the skin of one looking eaten away. Is there any particular reason for this?

Hi Indiajane,
Gemsbok usually do very well in this park and their condition is usually very good. However we are currently experiencing a severe drought and this may be a factor contributing to their poor condition. Animals in poor condition seldom invest their energy in grooming and tick loads tend to consolidate. This further contributes to animal stress. Competition for scarce resources with other species, during times like this, also play a role.
