Is it Raining in ADDO??

Unread postby Henk » Thu Nov 13, 2008 8:36 am

Can anyone tell us if it is raining in Addo.

We had 170 mm since Thuesday and I hope it is spreading wide enough to reach Addo.

Wonderful soaking rain for the past 24 hours here in EL - and my thoughts this morning were ... is it raining in Addo? :D

Have just come on line to ask the same thing - it is raining beautifully in PE, so hope they are getting it too?? If no one replies, I will just have to get in the car and go and look for myself!

I hope that the flooding didn't cause damage, but it is great to hear about the rain.

I'm still waiting for the official figures to come through, but in the past few days we've had about 70 mm rain. Will post when I have figures.

The Rain Has Come

Unread postby Addo Elephant » Mon Feb 09, 2009 3:39 pm

 It's raining in Addo! (or was this morning when I first tried to post this but was thwarted by uncommunicative telephone lines).

We had about 5mm of rain yesterday evening and then it rained solidly this morning. Hopefully it won't stop too soon

I'll keep you updated on millimetres received once I get the figures.

For those of you who haven't visited for a while and don't know why we're doing the rain dance, it is very dry in Addo (and much of the Eastern Cape). Although we can't say that we've had any wildlife deaths from the dry conditions as such, it is clear that many animals have lost condition. Animals such as baboons and vervet monkeys are clearly ranging further in search of food. Last year's rainfall was almost half of the long-term average annual rainfall.

Hopefully we'll see a bit more greenery soon.

Very glad to hear the rain has arrived. May it continue!

Just for interest sake: is Addo in a summer/winter rainfall belt? I am originally from Cape Town which gets winter rain and I am aware that some coastal areas stretching to PE can get rain during all seasons.
How much rain does Addo receive annually?
Are these dry conditions leading to severely depleted waterholes?

Thank you for taking time to answer my questions? I have been to Addo once in September 2000 and really enjoyed the landscapes and vegetation. Good variety of wildlife too!

Take care,

kudu

Glad to hear that its raining.
According to a local weather forecaster the Eastern Cape is going to get a lot of rain tommorrow and maybe tonight. Lets hope this is correct.
Please keep us informed, Megan.

What good news, hope you get lots now - the whole area including the karroo needs rain badly
