I went for my weekly morning in Addo today as I am busy tomorrow ...It really was quiet but it was great to watch this well known lioness interact at the top of the hill. She would spend minutes listening and then gave a full repotoire of her roaring skills sometimes for a full minute then she would listen carefully for a couple more minutes before bellowing out her gutteral roars. I am sure I heard a faint answer but its so hard to establish exactly where it was coming from. I could hear a car coming up behind me and stop and switch off then another and then she stood up turned to face down the other side and ran out of sight ...possibly another lion that had answered her call but not certain of that at all but she looked pleased with what ever she ran at.

WOW Peter

You really take great pics, when my camera grows up I wanna take pics just like you ;-) At the moment got a small al'cheapo, it takes cool pics if i am am sitting within eating distance of the lions but nothing good from a long distance.

Well its just a matter of time before I upgrade, until then the best I can do is this...

Luckily not taken at Addo, if I took it in Addo it would have been the last pic I took with my Canon A400

Some exciting news! Kamkwa has a new cub!

The lioness has been seen with a new cub in Wayne's Valley (near the southern access road) on a couple of occasions by tourists and rangers.

Hopefully, I'll be able to post some photos of the new addition in the next few days.

WOW Megan .. Very exciting news. It would be so great if I get to see them during my visit in a weeks time. Is it only one cub or would there perhaps be more, but she was only seen with the one? Well done to mother Kamkwa   . Wonder how the males will react?

Looks like the lions are loving Carols Rest.

Wouldn't it be a great idea to have a webcam in Carols rest?
Such a pity that will probably never happen. Imagine the great pics we will see, then again imagine the trench from main camp to Carols rest for the fibre.. lol now thats a huge job.

Will cost way to much.

Anyway its not wrong to dream, maybe in the future when mobile cams are easier and cheaper and when Vodacom or MTN finally provide 3G in the park ;-)

This young Lioness is sharp sharp and even as young as she is ....doesnt seem to miss a trick when hunting say in an exposed area like Carol's Rest where there is not the typical Addo Cover to utilise. Here she is skillfully using the back end of my car as cover to get ever closer to 3 grazing Warthog up the hill..sorry very similar to a pic posted awhile ago but found this one which is more catlike in the hunt. If you look carefully at the background ..the lens has picked up the very light rain.

Very cute and cuddly-looking, isn't it?! But I'm sure you wouldn't want to face Kamkwa's claws and teeth...

Megan this is fantastic news...thanks for putting up the pics...Thats the hill coming out of Waynes Valley it looks like

Image

The above pic I took about a week ago of Gina about 200 metres further up the hill than the cub pics here. She was roaring, walking around and listening all the time and then suddenly after a spell of listening she looked over the hill ...got all excited and disappeared down the far side of the hill out of sight...Maybe it was Kamkwa and little one who had come in answer to the roars...who knows.

I believe the gestation period of a lion is 110 days which could explain that Kamkwa may have fallen pregnant in this courtship between her and Bitterbal on 16 Feb which would have made a birth around beginning of June??? please do the Maths as I am no good at these things.

Just been to Addo and we saw Ardlam and her 2 young one's feasting on a warthog they killed. It was just as you turn of the tarroad after Domkrag dam towards Carols Rest. Two lovely looking young lions. I will post some pics in a few days.

Then on Saterday afternoon we saw Gina on the hill just before the South Gate. I might be wrong but she looked very pregnant to me.
Can anyone help, is she pregnant?
