Oh wow, WB (HP) great pics. Where did you see these guys, on a tourist road?

We are visiting end of Sept, and really hope to see these fellows :D

Hi DB (DP) see you still remember the old name, body has not changed much !!! :) also see that you are quite cold where you are!
Yes DB this was on a tourist road , just about 2km on the Harveys loop road below Addo heights. I am off on patrol from Tuesday at Darlington and will be back about 10 Sept. Give me a call when you are here.
I also had a fab time for a month on patrol in KNP, if I remember I met tou at Croc Bridge just as I finished my stint there and was coming back home.
Those boys really are great, there were two of them. I don't get much into Addo anymore as I am mainly at Darlington.
Have a look in the CC thread as well, I posted there - don't know when I will get back on the threads
again as I am very busy at Darligton/Addo.

Had a wonderful couple of days at Darlington Lodge several years ago.
Had hoped to stay again in 2010 but it was apparently closed.
Any idea what the future holds for the lodge?
Regards
JDW

Hi JDW - For the foreseeable future it will remain closed - I have managed to keep one room in a usable state for myself when doing duty there. With a new project starting up the conference room has had a bit of restoration and is used for staff training and lectures,

I hope to visit Addo next weeek, the first time in 18 months. One of the main reasons I don't go there so regularly is because the lionesses at Addo have been put on contraceptives for the past few years, with NO cubs now for at least 3-4 years...

That is BORING!

Would somebody be so kind as to forget to give them their tablets one month so they can have some fun and we can have something more interesting to look at?
Just joking -- I know they were injected and it lasted at least 2 years -- but surely its about time they did what the Karoo NP lions did, they just went and got pregnant behind the Sanparks officials' backs anyway!

Last count from Megan a year or two ago was 17 hyenas and 9 lions. I hope it is not 30 hyenas v 9 lions now....

Could somebody please give us the latest score? Seriously.

I am also rather curious to see how much Vali Moosa's tusks have grown since I saw him in April last year...

Thanks and God bless,

Friedrich von Hörsten

We're glad to report that at last census earlier this year, Addo tallied 11 adult lion. Only six hyena were spotted, but there should be more than that - around 17.

Dear Fayroush,

Thanks very much for the feedback. Can you please confirm how many lion are in the Main game area. I have heard that it is 6 (4 males and 2 females), with 3 in Nyathi section and 2 in the Kuzuko concession, which does indeed total 11.

Thanks and kind regards,

Pat

Thanks Fayroush,

Which means more joy for people who visit Nyathi.

And still means that seeing a lion at Addo is like looking for a needle in a haystack...again.
* Originally exactly 6 lions were imported from Kgalagadi for the main game viewing area, but the males spent most of their time near Scotia safaris looking at female lions on the fence line, so seldom seen.
* Then came the first cubs, and suddenly game viewing was much more exciting because Marion Baree area was excellent for Kamqua, Gina and cubs!
* Then we doubled the size of the game camp by including Matyholweni, still with the same number of lions.
* Then we contracepted the females to reduce breeding rate and save the expensive disease-free buffalo.
* Then we moved Nossob, Bitterbal, Kamqua and Megan plus cubs to Karoo NP, and Tsamma and Kalahari to other places, and now 3 young males to Nyathi as well.
So the wheel has turned completely, and we are back with 6 lions in double the space... which translates into zero lion sightings in my last 4 outings to Addo over about 7 days. At least we heard them roaring from the main camp at night, and that was very special.

Question: Could you tell us if those 2 females are still on contraceptives, and whether you think 6 lions is enough for such a vast area as the main camp game viewing area?

Thank you so much,

Friedrich von Hörsten

Ps. Reason for interest -- I love Addo, and the addition of super predators turned Addo from a safari park to a proper national park. I always take my school photography club there on tour, but haven't for the last 2 years because of the miniscule chance of seeing big predators there -- rather took them to Kgalagadi this year.
I am planning a trip for April next year, but it seems as if I need to take them somewhere else again.
