Cheetah of Mountain Zebra Park

Unread postby MZNP_Guides » Wed Apr 09, 2014 5:09 pm

The 5 adult cheetah are doing very well in the Park. Two of the four females have given birth to cubs in the past 3 months, one with three and the other older female with four cubs. The new male that was introduced last year have been doing his rounds.

Hi Charl :D

Wonderful news and thanks for sharing. One of my favourite National Parks. Say Hi to Richard Okkers who found us a black footed cat the last time we were in MZNP.

Hi All!

Sharifa, Richard has taken a guide position at Augrabies NP! So you will find him there. Yes, the black-footed cats are special but very rare to see. Hoping to see some more this winter!

The cheetah have been seen very regularly by guests in the past weeks. Last weekend I think all of them were seen. The two females with cubs were encountered near the Main Gate and on the Sonnerust 4x4 trail. They are growing up very rapidly and following their respective mothers all over the hills and plains.

We had some good sightings on the cheetah tracking activity of Nixi, one of the older females, and her four cubs of about 3 and a half months old!

I will post some photos again soon hopefully!

Charl

Hi me again!

If anyone has some good photos of the cheetah at Mountain Zebra NP and know which ones they saw (maybe told during a cheetah tracking drive or by a staff member), or even if you don't know, I would appreciate some to make a cheetah ID guide for visitors to the Park.

Preferably front and side photos, of the animal walking, sitting or lying. Walking or in an upright position is the best. The approximate location and date seen could also help us with the ID. This will also help us to know in which area the cheetah are, if seen by guests and will enhance the experience of visitors to the Park as they can get some info on the cheetah they spotted.

Photos can be emailed to me at charl.lyell@sanparks.org

Much appreciated!
Charl

Hi all

The cheetah have been doing very well, including the females with cubs. The one female, Nixi, and her four cubs are regularly seen on the cheetah tracking activity! They are very habituated now and still has some neck hairs standing up, very qute!
We saw them chased by an adult male baboon yesterday. They looked very bewildered but no harm was done fortunately!

Hi there

The one female with four cubs have been seen in the mountains several times, where she also caught a grey rhebok to feed her young. We had a lovely sighting with some german students after tracking her down.

She has left the area since before the snow and strong winds set in. Maybe they knew what was coming?
