Thanks for your replies Leaping Lizards and Dinkybird,

I'll fit in Karoo NP somehow.
Which places along the garden route should I visit according to you - so much to see, so little time (always the same problem, right??)

Maybe it's best to start my trip in Capetown on 20 Dec and work my way to PE. The garden route might be busy then but Addo NP maybe less busy.

I spent a week in Cape town in 2002 but I'ld love to go back (still have to go to Robben island - didn't manage to go last time since the boats to the island were cancelled a couple of days in a row due to rough seas).

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi,
I add my questions to this thread.
We are thinking to go to Addo and Karoo (and perhaps Camdeboo and/or M. Zebra) at the end of December 2013. We would have about 14 days, starting and ending the tour in Cape Town.
My first questions are:

- what about the car? do we need a 4x4 or 4x4 low range to see the best of these parks? (our latest experience with SanParks is Kgalagadi - Botswana side, there you definitely need 4x4 low range... )

- we will have our own tent, I know it is very late to book camps for that period, do you thing we have some chances? if we camp outside the parks is it possible to visit them in day trips?

I will come back with other questions, for the moment thanks for your replies!

Hi silvia.n

I have been to the Karoo NP 3 times and Addo NP 5 or 6 times. I have never used a 4 x 4, and have never felt like I am missing out.

The Karoo NP is a big park with very little roads. There are some 4 x 4 tracks that allow you to see more of the park. We are told by the rangers at Karoo that the soil in the East of the Park (where the 4 x 4 trails go) is sandy and therefore better habitat for foxes etc. Have a look at the Map of Karoo National Park and you can then decide on your car. My SO has done the 4 x 4 trails and says that they are pretty basic.

If you do not get camping spot in Addo, you are allowed to do day trips, and Addo also does Game Drives for people not staying in the park (They are very pricey though) If you do get into the camp site at Addo, you will not be disappointed, one of SANParks best camping sites.

Enjoy

PS. All my opinions on Addo are based on the main game area and camp. Addo has some 4 x 4 trails also, but I cannot comment on them.

Thank you Leaping Lizard!
I had a look to availability in Addo and Karoo and fortunately there are still campsites. :D

As for Karoo 4x4 loop, I see from the map it is a big part of the Park! Do anyone know the Embizweni cottage? is it worth a visit?

Hi!
we have booked our stay in Addo, but unfortunately the campsite was fully booked. :(
So we have the first night in Narina bush camp, and we have to find where to go the second night. (the day after we will be on the Garden Route, on the way to Cape Town).

Do anyone have some suggestion for a camping outside the Park? I see there are a lot of them but I don't know if someone is too far. :hmz:

Do you think we should wait and see if there is some last-minute cancellation in the Park campsite?

Frontier parks : Lenght of stay advice

Unread postby Goronta » Tue Feb 11, 2014 2:21 pm

It might be a strange question but how many days will you stay as a minimum to enjoy the beauty of parks like Cambedoo,Mountain Zebra and Addo ? :hmz:
I'm preparing my first visit in those parks next august (I know it will be cold !!!) and I don't want to run from one place to another one.
I will certainly start by Golden Gate park and end by the Garden Route National park after the 3 Frontier parks.
It will be my first stay in South Africa without any visit to Kruger or KTP.
But changes are good sometimes !
I will spend one month arriving in Jo'burg and flying back from Cap town.
Thanks for your help :D

Goronta, I would say at the very least 3 full days in MZNP and Addo each.

But if you could make it much longer that would be great.........

Hi Goronto,

I have not been to MZNP or Addo so I will take LQ advise on that one.

I have been to Camdeboo and it is real gem, I completely fell in love with place. Went there by chance and it is properly one of the most underrated parks in the country. Very small so 2 nights should be enough as it will give you one full day to explore the park and it is relatively close to MZNP so you will have the next day to explore a bit before you move on as well.
I must say that we went there in summer when it was really green so might be very different in August.

Goronta
I would suggest the following;
Camdeboo - max two nights
Mountain Zebra - 3 nights
Addo - at least 4 nights including one in the Spekboom tented camp
Tsitsikamma (Storm River) - At least 2 nights
Bontebok - 2 nights

Also consider a night or to at Hermanus whale watching
Hope this helps

Hi Goronta I am very  that you are planning your trip
We have been to MZNP and I would recommend you give yourself enough time
to do the Cheetah walk ... Addo is my favourite next to Kruger it's not as big but
still lots to see .. We have been there a few time and the last twice we stayed in the
Safari Tents and would say book them if you can your are by the fence and also an easy
walk up to the shop & restaurant ... Storms River we stayed in a Forrest Cabin (not to be
confused with a forest hut which is very basic) and you are right on the sea 'AMAZING'
Another place we stayed (as a special treat) was Knysna Lakes section ...
Tree Top Chalet ... Now that was something else, look it up its a definite treat even got
a Hot Tub on the deck very romantic although no animals plenty bird life

I second dellac's suggestion that you do the cheetah-tracking walk at MZNP. I'd also suggest more than three nights there as I found the four nights that I stayed was too short. Next time I will go there for a full week, as of all the parks on your itnerary (I've visited all except for Camdeboo), MZNP is by far my favourite!

Hi Goronta

We meet again from the Arid Parks site. :hello:

Addo is about an hours drive from our home and we regularly visit there. As a matter of fact, we leave tomorrow for a 4 night stint. MZNP is only an hour or so further and we invariably spend 2 nights there going to or returning from KTP.

Addo is an elephant park and elephants you will see!! It also has many productive waterholes to sit at as well as a diverse variety of game and birds. Lions Too!!!

A lot of sound advice has already been given you above that will certainly help with your planning. We find that 3 to 4 nights in Addo to be sufficient without rushing things, 2 nights in MZNP gives good coverage and the same again for Camdeboo. Although cold weather will be experienced in August, this should not be a hinderance really. Don't forget some warm clothing and your :cam:

Will pm you after this visit to Addo and fill you in on our sightings.

Enjoy your planning. It WILL be worth it.
