Hi there guys. What is the status of Caracal in TMNP? Yesterday afternoon I came over Hospital Bend and saw road kill in the road that looked a lot like a small Caracal, judging by the colour and I am sure I saw the ear tufts. Is this possible? If yes, how big is the caracal population on the actual Table Mountain part of the park? I hope the loss of a young caracal will not be a big blow to the population. Are the fences appropriate for medium sized animals like caracal and porcupine etc?

I meet a full grown Caracal close to Rhodes memorial last week when I was out walking my dog. It was literally 2 meters from us, but ran away as soon as it discovered us.. I asked the guards that drives around what kind of cats that live in the area and that I had just spotted one and they immediately answered caracal and I got an impression that it wasn't a big deal to see one (I just moved to SA from Norway in dec and was SUPER excited about the sighting), but I tried to look up how common they are in the area but I couldn't find any thing...

Hi SofieP and Welcome!

I would also be super excited to see a caracal -- anywhere!   You can bet that I will pay a visit to the Rhodes Memorial area soon. What time of day did you see your caracal?

Thank you very much:)
It was around 5-5.30 PM, and only a 10 min walk from the restaurant so it was really a shock for both us and the caracal I think. haha.. It looked me straight in the eyes and jumped around and disappeared into the bush, it was a very cool experience :D .. We were actually heading down to have closer look at the zebras that were close to the highway and there it was.. My dog was maybe one meter from it, but luckily he didn't notice it

Hi SofieP and a big welcome to the forum!
Definitely a special sighting! I have lived in CT all my life and have walked on the mountain often, and have never come across a caracal!

In my opinion, road kill is an indication of the health of the population.
I've seen Caracal on the slopes of Lions Head, just below the top Table Mountain cable way station and a friend has photographed them on signal hill.
That seems to indicate they are doing quite well.

If the recently introduced Klipspriger population increases and does well that will also help the Caracal.

See my friend's pic on Signal Hill.
