Hi,

I am so pleased to have heard of someone who has stayed at Eland cottage. We are going in December and I have been trying (without much luck) to find someone who had been and can tell me more about it.

Please can you tell me more about the accommodation and staying in the park?

You can pm me if this will detract from the thread.

Thanks,
Liora

Himalayan Tahrs on Table Mountain

Yes, this "woolly mammoth" thing is a Himalayan Tahr. Still on Table Mountain after many attempts to eradicate them.
Wikipedia: Himalayan_Tahr

Was out climbing last Saturday between Plattekloof and the Cable Way.
Saw this feral Himilayan Tahr which obviously is one of several that escaped the eradication effort in 2005.
I guess they will have to try again.

I see others have been spotted in the same area last year.

Excellent news :dance:

We will be down that aways in October, after a visit to Kruger. Hope 'it' hasn't grown too much by then; we'll be keeping our eyes peeled...

I remember going up Table Mountain at the end of 1963 with the school cadets. We came a cross a berg adder and a fool picked it up by the tail. We had the Field Ambulance there who injected antivenom. We then made a bier from branches and carried the victim down the mountain to the Ranger's hut. The victim spent a few days in hospital but was fine thereafter.

Last weekend whilst taking some friends visiting from the UK to Cape Point we had one of my most unusual sightings there. We spotted this Cape Vulture soaring high above the Buffelsfontein visitors centre!

I was wondering if someone from SANParks could tell me what the three camera traps on the road to Olifantsbos beach are studying?
They are about 1km on the left before you get to the beach. They are pointing at the ground and so I was wondering if they were studying something unusual?

Hi Astromat;

I have sent an email to my colleagues in Table Mountain and have asked for their assistance in finding out more about the cameras.

Dear Astromatt and forumites;

At any given time there are 30 plus research studies being undertaken in the TMNP. Many of the studies employ camera traps and there are at least three applications using camera traps. The cameras are part of an existing research which we are not able to provide specifics at this current time.

Thanks for digging for me.
It's a shame you weren't able to find out what these ones were specifically doing as they clearly weren't just there counting the usual animals.
Thanks
