Tented Camps Table Mountain NP

Unread postby Dessert » Thu Mar 10, 2011 6:36 pm

Hi,

I have a question concerning the accomondation in Table Mountain NP.
I is possible to stay in a tented camp, Smitswinkel Tented Camp oder Silvermine Tented Camp, although we are not on the Hoerikwaggo Trail?
We want to drive by car. Is it possible to drive to these tented camps by car? How far is the next parking area?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Dessert

Thanks for your query - yes, you may by all means stay in the Hoerikwaggo Tented Camps without hiking the trail.

Parking is available (on arrangement with the bookings officer) at both Smitswinkel and Silvermine Tented Camps.

Both sites offer self-catering facilities with full kitchen and bathroom facilities - you will need to supply your own bedding and towels. The cost of Smitswinkel is R 500.00 per unit (2-sleeper) per night, and Silvermine is R 400.00 per unit (2-sleeper) per night. Smitswinkel offers a wheelchair-assisted facility.

Please contact the bookings office to make a booking on 021 780 9204. The contact person here is Jaqueline Simons or Musa.

Hi, i'm also interested in the camps. I believe it is very nice? Somebody told me that The Baboons could be quite a problem, can you please tell me more?
Thank you

Hi Philip,

The parks are indeed, gorgeous, if we do say so ourselves! :)
All camps are equipped with perimeter fencing to guard against baboons - Smitswinkel in particular (an area more prone to baboon activity than the other areas) is wired with electric fencing to protect guests from baboons.

Hope this puts your mind at ease?

Thank you for your help!
I have still one short question:
Is it also possible to book the tented camp via the internet platform?

Thanks!

Hi -

I also have a question about the tented camps. I can't find a description of the tents - especially how insulated they are. If sleeping in a 2-bed tent in May, is it necessary to have cold-weater gear (i.e. insulated sleeping bags), or are the tents themselves insulated enough that ordinary sheets will be warm enough?

Also, do the kitchens in the tented camps have dishes and utensils, or is it necessary to bring our own?

Thanks!

---Mike

Hi Mike

The information you seek about the Tented Camps can be found on our website - go to www.sanparks.org, scroll down to Table Mountain National Park on the A-Z Parks menu. You will find a link to the Hoerikwaggo Tented Camps on the right-hand side of the page. Here you will find all the information you need to know about the camps.

The kitchens, yes are fully equipped. You need only bring your food etc.

As for the insulation of the tents themselves, if camping in winter, it is advisable to bring warm bedding as the areas that the camps are situated in can get very cold at night. The tents block out the elements, however temperature is not guaranteed. Knowing the Cape's winters, especially the temperatures on the mountain itself - it would be advisable to bring warmer bedding as against ordinary sheets.

Best regards
