Chanting and Singing in Newlands Forest

Unread postby Embily » Sun Feb 02, 2014 3:19 pm

I am a regular walker in Newlands forest and recently I have noticed that there are groups of people singing and chanting in the forest.
Often I dont see them, but can hear them.
Yesterday 1st Feb 2014, I investigated further to locate the source of the sound and saw a group of people, covered from head to toe in white sheets. I did not recognise the language used for the singing and or chanting.

Does anyone know what these people are doing? Is it a religious ceremony of some sort? Are they allowed to carry out such ceremonies in the forest or do they need a permit?

It detracts from the reason that most of us walk there. To be at one with Nature and listen to the birds, running water and wind rustling in the trees.

No not that often. A friend also saw a similar group around Rhodes Memorial about one month ago.

Sounds like Wiccans. No need to worry about them, they're very in tune with nature.
The simple rule to follow with all animals is one of respect.

Today I found the spot where they were congregated.

It is an area of about 50 to 60 sq metres, which has been cleared of vegetation, alien and indigenous.
There were 9 empty plastic cooldrink and water bottles strewn around and other items of discarded litter.

In the centre of this clearing a fire had been made on the empty ground. This seems to be a fire hazard and whoever was there, was definitely not environment friendly or interested in their surroundings at all.

I have not heard from anyone as to whether one needs a permit for holding any religious ceremonies in Newlands Forest? Does the permit allow fires and clearing vegetation as well?

These are good questions, embily. I hope that SANParks will investigate and provide us all with an answer to your concerns. Perhaps as you are in Cape Town, you might want to telephone their offices in Tokai?

Hi Embily;

I have spoken to my colleagues in Cape Town and they have confirmed that no permit was issued for this.

Is it possible to indicate where exactly did this incidence occur?
