Hi,

We are doing a trip to the KTP in May 2015. Our itinerary at the moment is :

3 nights Mata Mata
1 night Grootkolk
3 nights Nossob
2 nights Twee Rivieren

Our first concern is our vehicle. We own a Ford Kuga SUV and are concerned about the roads and possible damage as this is not a 4X4. We have read varying reports about the corrugation, some stating a sedan can handle the roads, but we are concerned about long term damage to the vehicle. We have looked at hiring a 4X4 from Upington but it is seeming expensive and if we can avoid this expense we would like to. Any advice on the roads for the route we will be driving.

Our second concern is driving from Mata Mata to Grootkolk in one day. Is this distance do-able? And from our understanding the dune road from Nossob to Mata Mata is one way, is this still the case?

All and any advice is greatly appreciated. This will be my husbands first trip the KTP while it is my second.

Thank You !!!

We were there in Feb 2014 , and while I am not familiar with a Ford Kuga, we saw many regular sedans. While we were there the corrugation was not that bad at all, but we did rent a 4x4 in Upington as we were going to Bitterpan. I have been on tarred roads that were worse than the park roads.
Mata Mata to Grootkolk is possible. We did KTC to Grootkolk. Start early and you will have time for some stopping at great sightings. The dune roads are two way traffic. Nossob to Bitterpan is one way, and some of the wilderness trails are one way, but the roads you will be travelling are all 2 way.

A very warm welcome to you Alisonkerr :gflower: and Hollydog :gflower:

I cannot comment on the roads and I am sure that you will get a lot of advice. In terms of vehicles, if you are very concerned, the little Diahutsu Terios seems to cope well and it seems to be a lot less expensive to hire.

Thanks Meandering Mouse.
I have used many of the tips and lots of the information I have learned from here, I thought it was time to try to give back when I may be able to help.
Now all I have to do is figure out how to post a picture................................... ( I know there are forums here explaining, just have to track them down - I just love the photos people share!)

welcome hollydog and Alisonkerr1 :D

hollydog, a SUV is perfect, just think to deflate the tires at 1,6/1,4 at the station
and to not damage your car, don't drive to fast, if there is a lot of corrugations

what a chance

Thank you for all the feedback!!

I feel ALOT more comfortable taking our car into the park now, although a 4x4 would give us more access to other roads, the Kuga has excellent clearance and is a lot more affordable saving us about cost of hiring at over R1000 a day.

I was in the park in DEC 2012 and the roads were hideous but perhaps that was peak time traffic causing the roads to be in such a state.

We originally weren't able to get Grootkolk and we were going to stay at Nossob for 4 nights, but there was a cancellation and we were able to get a night, from my reading on the forum it appears quite different and worthwhile, was this your experience?

Do you have more info about time and distance from MM to Grootkolk? We will leave at gate opening from MM, assuming minimal stops, could be expect to be there by mid afternoon?

Thank you again.

depent of what you will see

it needs about 6h to go to Grootkolk
plus petrol at Nossob (att. it seems it's closed at 12h... till 13h or 14h can't remember  )

(MM to Urikaruus... 1h. / Urikaruus to Grootkolk 5h)

gate times in (for) May : 7h - 18h

about 310 km :
MM to Urikaruus 60km
upper dunes to Dikbaardskolk 60km
Dikbaardskolk to Nossob 50km
Nossob to Grootkolk 140km

Ok, perfect. Thank you. Seems worthwhile to keep the Grootkolk booking then.

Now we just need to plan the route and stops between Durban and KTP.

Great you got a night at Grootkolk. It is absolutely worthwhile! :)
