Driving the coastal section of Namaqua NP

Unread postby shfish » Tue Aug 27, 2013 8:41 pm

Hi

I have driven most of the inland section of Namaqua NP in my X-Trail 4x4 soft roader. I'm thinking of camping at one of the coastal sites soon. I know that Delwers camp is an easy drive but can anybody tell me if I would be able to drive the entire coastal section between Groen and Spoeg in my X-Trail?
Thanks.

If you have experience of driving on very soft sand (thick) for a fair way, then yes. That is the challenge of doing that bit of the 4x4 route in the park.

Deflate your tyres to around 1.2 bar and keep momentum (2nd gear and keep the revs around 3000 rpm) and you should not have a problem.

This time of the year the sand is normally a bit wet and not so loose. During hot summer days it could become a challenge. I did it about 2 weeks ago and it was a walk in the park but I do have a proper 4x4.

Will be challenging if you have trailer as well. If not, following Blackie's advice should get you through. Just remember that the sandy patches stretch for miles, with easier patches inbetween.

Thank you all for the advice. I'll make sure I've got enough manpower to dig me out when I go!

We also intend doing a bit of off-roading at Namaqua on our upcoming trip - thanks to all for the advice! :)
