Most of us on this forum love the Kgalagadi and can't wait to visit again from the very minute we leave it. I got to thinking what makes it so special. Sure, you can see fabulous sightings of lions and leopards, but that's not unique to Kgalagadi. What makes its gees (spirit) creep so successfully under your skin and into your heart? Here's my pick for the top 10 reasons, but I'd love to hear ideas from the rest of you too.

Annie R it seems that the Kgalagadi also has a spirit as in a "Gees" like some of our other National Parks – Kruger for example :) . It is one of the National Parks that we have not visited yet, but it is on our to do list as the Kgalagadi is held in high regard by so many people.

I have no doubt, Grantmissy, that you will fall under its spell when you do visit. It's very different from Kruger, but special in its own way.

I am sure we will Annie :) . And it is, according to what I read on the forum, slightly easier to see Brown Hyena’s in the Kgalagadi than what it is to see them in Kruger where they are not so easily seen .

Perhaps that is one of the 10 reasons to love the Kgalagadi thumbs_up:

Good one! We were there in Feb and May this year and saw brown hyenas both times - annoyingly brief sightings, but sightings nonetheless.

In no particular order.

1. The openness and visibility.
2. The massive black maned lions.
3. Nossob - the remoteness, the hide, the ambience.
4. Pygmy falcons.
5. The unsophisticated picnic spots, where a 'welcoming' committee' could be asleep under the table.
6. Magnificent cheetah sightings.
7. Brown hyenas.
8. Seeing KG & family again.
9. Walks with KG.
10. Marie se Draai - where great sightings often occur.

I could probably do another 10.......

why I love THE park
because there is nothing and everything
endless skies
no tarred roads
no cell phone reception
no gas grills and other nonsense at a stop
small camps
most of the time nice people who tell you about their sightings
the smell of the sand
the most friendly people working there
and
you never know what animal you will see

Nice ones, Bush Baptist. I reckon we could probably come up with about 100 if we really put our minds to it!

It's unique beauty
It's unique cruelty
Thunder and dust storms
Tracks in the red sand
The vast openness
The feeling that you're the only person on earth
The "mood swings" it has
The smell of the rain which is still miles away
Vacuuming the car at home and collecting the red sand for your garden
Listening to the Afrikaans song "Ver in die ou Khalahari" and you realize you need, you have to get back

:hmz: Can't say it inspires me. It is too funereal, exactly the opposite of my feelings when I think of KTP.

BB - being a soutie, we cannot expect you to get the real sense of longing that that song portrays

BB - there's a certain sense of nostalgia portrayed by the words, and you have to be old enough to really appreciate it, not a raving youngster brought up in the 80's like you

My list:

The openness
The remoteness
The immaculate blue skies
The amazing sunsets
The gravel corrugated roads
Often it is only you around a sighting for 10 - 15 minutes
The smell of the dunes and vegetation after a thunderstorm
the Thunderstorms
a Leopard sighting
Meeting FotomalJohan at Nossob
and so on, and so on.......

Blackie
