As we now know booking at KTP is not so easy - a popular place for somewhere so far off the beaten track, eh?
Our provisional itinerary is: 2 nights at Killiekrankie, 5 nights at Bitterpan and 2 nights at Mata Mata - all booked between 1-10 June 2014.
On reflection is 5 nights too long at Bitterpan? Also we are keen birders so any hints on best birding spots would be good. All suggestions welcome!

Welcome to the forum Supermonkey.

I think 2 nights at Bitterpan would be enough. You do know that you need a 4x4 to get there and it is 1 way from Nossob?

The whole park is a good birding spot, but birds often congregate at the waterholes, and Lanners at distant trees, waiting to pounce.

The dune roads for larks etc, but the river roads for most raptors.

What are you specifically wanting to see?

Hi, agree, 2 nights at Bitterpan is enough.
Look at the map of the park and you will see that you need 4x4 and it is a one way route, so in 5 nights you will be repeating drives constantly.
Try to stay at Nossob and/or Grootkolk to see that part of the park.It is my favourite area.
If you can't get bookings now, don't give up.keep looking on the online bookings ,because cancellations do come up.
Enjoy.

I do agree with the other members - two nights are enough for Bitterpan. We also stayed for 2 nights at Bitterpan in 2011 and it was enough to experience what Bitterpan has to offer. Rather stay a few days more at Nossob or Mata Mata (I just love the road up to 13th borehole - especially if you are also a keen photographer like me). Just visit my blog (address below) and click on Kgalagadi on the right-hand side to see all my posts including my trip reports on Kgalagadi.

Enjoy the trip.

Thank you, all, for the prompt and helpful advice. We have changed our plans and now have 2 nights in Killiekrankie, 2 in Nossob, 2 in Bitterpan and 3 at Mata Mata. Roll on, June 2014!

This Forum is fantastic - and addictive.

It depends where you are from and where you are going to Supermonkey. You haven't given us any idea. If you are leaving the park to go south, it might be a better idea to spend your last night at 2R to get an early getaway.

We're in Durban but will not be in a rush and will meander home in a suitably laid-back and meditative state after our KTP sojourn.
