Hi All! :)

I'm leaving for my first trip to kgalagadi next Saturday. We are staying in Upington then off to kgalagadi.

I've been to Kruger many times (100+) but this is my first time going to kgalagadi.

Is there anything different I should do or pack or plan? For example I know there are no skottles for rent so breakfast will be cold meats or cereal etc

Can anyone give me some tips on anything specific/unique to kgalagadi?

What is the best route to Upington from jhb? Shortest is the one that goes past lichtenberg, are there any current roadworks?

I did do a search but couldn't find a topic and hope it's in the right section.

Thank all :)

David

Hi David,

Your best bet is to trawl the KTP threads & travel tales.

It will be rather cold at night, and they switch off the generator at Nossob between 23h00 and 5h00.

Otherwise have a great time.

David1

We will also be arriving sat 15 June til 22 June-look out for silver Prado with EWT spare wheel cover!

KTP can feel a bit quieter than Kruger but when you see something, you tend to "see it well" due to the open vegatation. Nights are cold-like BB said-bring warm jacket and beanie!

We drive via Kimberley - we have had some bad stop-go experiences on Lichtenberg road-although that was a few years back now

Enjoy your trip!

KTP is quite different from KNP.

Make sure to pack your sunglasses and binoculars.

Picnic sites are few and far between with no fences. Check out the bathrooms and surrounding area carefully before exiting your vehicle.

At which camps will you be staying?

Hi David1,

We have always taken the Potchefstroom/Klerksdorp road and then connected to the N14 at Delareyville following the N14 until Upington.

Besides the potholes between Klerksdorp and Delareyville the road is not too bad, but the stop and goes at Kuruman can be a time waster.

I am also thinking of the Kimberley road as suggested by Jo for our next trip end of the year and can recommend it as an alternative option to the N14. After Kimberley take the N8 and N10 to Upington and then straight north to KTP.

What do you need to take extra to KTP
Drinking water
Fresh food and meat.
Firewood or charcoal
Warm clothes (jackets, gloves and beanie)
Skin cream (campher cream and other)

There are shops in KTP, but not always enough stock and very expensive.
Remember a tyre repair kit - lots of thorns that can puncture the tyres. You can go in a normal sedan, but a bakkie, SUV or 4x4 is preferable to travel on the corrugated roads. You will leave the park before the school holiday and not experience too bad road conditions.

Just got back yesterday from a week - its already really COLD - it was minus 3 at KTC and even less at Uri apparently with everthing all iced up in the mornings ... hot water bottles are a must plus the ususal beanies, gloves etc.

The road up to Mata Mata was diabolical for the first 5 days - was driving in low range at 30 as it was the only way to make it bearable even with tyres at 1.4 ... BUT they graded the roads on Thursday so next week should be much better

Enjoy !!

Hi all,

could anybody please advise me which two bedroom unit in the Nossob Rest camp would be better? Would it be the Family Chalet (FA6) ot the Guesthouse (GH4)?

Thanks

Hi Romi

The guest houses (GH) are higher up the the slope that Nossob is built on so over-looks the camp. They are furtherest from hide but are thatch compared to other units that are corrugated iron. Unfortunately haven't stayed at the other unit.

Enjoy the Kgalagadi!

The shops are very basic and due to the distances expensive. Take what you need along or buy at Upington. Further take it slow and enjoy. The magic of the Kgalagadi will be bringing you back for 100+ trips.........
