This is a quote by Pikasso from GavinW's trip report of his recent trip to KTP

Quote:
I am digressing a bit from gavin's TR here, but I am too hapy to tell you that we had a mail from Margie Mills confirming that Mummy (Elena) gave birth to 4 cubs lately.

Now I know 2 different people who were in KTP last week that had sightings of the new family in the Mata Mata area

I'm hoping to get permission to post a couple of the photo's here and would LOVE anyone else with sightings to please add them here as well.

I didn't get to see them, so I don't have any photos. But the Cheetah Project people told me that the four cubs are doing fantastic.

I did see a mom and her three adorable kittens at Montrose (and thought at the time it might have been Elena). Those are going up on my TR.

KTP is sure swimming with cheetahs at the moment.

Pikasso suggested this topic following my trip report, when I wrote about a mom (collared) and her three small cubs in the Montrose area.

When I was in KTP last week, these cheetahs were spotted daily and everyone seemed to have a great story to tell about them (kills, chases, etc...).

Does anyone have any more information about them?

It would be fun to have a new cheetah family to follow in KTP!

Hi all
I just posted the following on the "WANTED: cheetah cub + mum with collar regular updates!" thread, did not realise that this thread was started for the new cubs.

We saw mummy with 4 cubs playing in the road on 11 July 2009 between Craig Lockhart and Dalkeith causing quite a traffic jam!
Unfortunately we could not get all 4 cubs with mum in one image, but here are some footage.

Hi

I'm going to be visiting Kgalagadi for the first time in August, from the UK. I'm especially keen to see cheetahs. Is there a particular area, which can be visited in a sedan, which is best for them. Being a very experienced naturalist, I'm all too aware that no sighting can be guaranteed but I am keen to increase my chances.

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

Hi ipswichlister

Welcome the forum.

My first visit in June 2008 we saw no cheetah.

Our next visit July 2009 we saw mom and 4 cubs.

Third visit Feb 2010 we saw 12 different cheetah, all along the main routes but all along the Auob river. The main 2 routes are accessible by sedan.

Good luck and enjoy.

Hi and welcome Steve!

I am not a very experienced visitor of KTNP - but I did see cheetah in May of last year, a wonderful sighting in an area not far from Twee Riverien, and very accessible in a sedan.

Are you aware of the cheetah studies being done in Kgalagadi by Dr Gus Mills? Read here

Hi ipswichlister (are you crazy to choose such a complicated nickname ?) !!!

When you are back, please please please, give us feedback : updates wanted here

There is a band of 4 cheetahs (2 with collars) that seems to move from one riverbed to the other between Rooiputs and Houmoed...

In Grootkolk cheetahs are often seen too, maybe they are not reported as often because there is less people going there...

Tut, tut BB. You haven't been reading Gus Mills' reports have you? cheetahs seem to do a lot of hunting at night, particularly in Summer.

Hi there,

Sorry for the late reply we were off-line yesterday.

Herewith the reply from Dr. Gus Mills:

'Basically the cheetah population in the Kgalagadi appears to be sound. In contrast to the Serengeti population which has been well researched, Kalahari cheetahs have lower mortality rates amongst cubs. Whereas only 5% of cubs born reach maturity in Serengeti cheetahs, we have found that 30% (10 out of 30) cubs have done so. However, time periods between litters are much longer for Kalahari cheetahs. These differences are probably a result of the higher predator density in Serengeti causing higher mortality rates, off set by better food availability causing better reproduction'.

@ Gila, please let me knoe if you did come right with the information you were looking for.
