Night one - just outside Mata Mata is camping site, but you can make it easely to Mata Mata. Sleep two nights, next day to Twee rivieren en then out the park.

I want to cross to Namibia through Mata Mata. I know i need my driver's licence, my car paper's, letter from insurance company and a car disk. But do I need a police clearance certificate? The AA and High Commission in Pta say no, but others say I will need it. Please help!

Hi there Peregrina,

Welcome to the forum, hope you will have a great time here.

The answer to your question is no, you will not need police clearance.

Hi Peregrina,

Additional info to what Jan said: When you get your passport stamped at TR to exit at Mata Mata, the Police may and sometimes does inspect you vehicle but only for the routine stuff. Same when leaving SA at Mata Mata. You have to report to SA Police before crossing into Namibia and they may search you again. Maybe that's where the confusion came in - you need Police clearance to leave the country - at the checkpoint. Make sure you don't have firewood with you when exit into Namibia.

This is a huge relief, WeskusKlong. Thank you. I am arriving this weekend and haven't been to the Park since 1987. I cannot wait to see it again.

Hi

We visiting Kgalagadi end of May 2013 staying at Mata Mata for 2 nights and were wondering whether it is worth doing a day trip across into Namibia? :)

Thanks

Just one question:

Why would you want to leave the park to go into Namibia?
The area around Mata Mata is mainly rural and does not have wildlife etc. I would understand leaving the park via Namibia, but wouldn't go on a day trip there. (Just my 2 cents  )

MauPerks,

Are you going to enter the park from Namibia? If not you need to remember to stamp your passport in Twee rivieren and pay the road fee when entering Namibia. I agree with GavinW if its just for one day its not worth it losing out some time to be in the park. You also need to return at 4 pm before the border closes.

MauPerks,

What are you trying to see in Namibia? :hmz:

I came that way in March, and seriously, nothing different to see for the next 200km!

I am concerned if you leave via Mata Mata, and re-enter RSA from Namibia, that you may have to stay another 2 compulsory nights in Kgalagadi before leaving via Twee Rivieren...?
Rather enjoy Kgalagadi, and if you are heading for Cape Town, then exit at Mata Mata and do Fish River Canyon en route to RSA via Noordoewer...
Enjoy -- it should look much better after the heavy rains over Easter!

God bless,

Friedrich von Hörsten
