Fully booked.....?

Today we tried to make a reservation for Kgalagadi Transf. park for early September 2015 ( The camps Nossob _4 nights and Grootkolk 1 night) and this is what the answer was:

Good morning
Unfortunately Nossob and Grootkolk are not available for those requested date
regards

How is this possible? It's the first day we can book. Grootkolk I can believe but Nossob....

Has anyone else also have this experience when making a booking 11 months in advance on the first day the bookings open?
Regards from the Netherlands, Linda.

Hello there ... Did you send an e-mail ?? I did that once and had a similar reply then I phoned and got what I wanted .. I suggest you give the Cape town office a ring you wont have to wait so long for the call to be answered and the lady is usually extremely helpful ( I know you are from the Netherlands but its worth a try)
and good luck

I was number 4 in the queue at Reservation House on 2nd June, to book for KTP in May 2015. My booking was loaded on their computer just after 7.30 a.m. and I could not get one of the nights I wanted at Nossob. Urikaruus was also fully-booked.

The only thing to do is keep looking for cancellations - they do happen. One year I broke my leg and had to cancel our well-planned trip to KTP!

Keep checking!

Yes, I send an e-mail. ( there was also a request for Twee rivieren, seems also full....?)
I will take your advice and phone or use the online bookings early tomorrow and see what's available then, so I'am still hoping :?
Regards, Linda

Does anyone know for real who or what takes preference at Sanparks booking office ?

I was number 1 in the queue at reservation house :-) I could not get the exact dates I wanted at Urikaruus but was able to shuffle the dates and get both Urikaruus and Gharagab for begining of Sept.

No despair needed! :)

We booked during the course of last month 8 nights KTP for early November 2014 (indeed '14!), Nossob, MM, 2R but also a night (just a single night though..) at Grootkolk and at Bitterpan. Am especially happy with the Grootkolk opportunity, I wished for 2 nights in a row there, but hey, let's be real ;)
As many will probably advice, although a pretty intensive process, have a look each day at the availabilities and be ready.

No specialist in the matter at all, but so many wilderness camps booking out completely on day 1...logically points indeed in the direction of 'preferred customers' (travel agencies?). But hey, that's just my logic here :)

Good luck!

Same situation for July 2015
But from 21 Augustus 2014 I could pick whatever and where ever I wanted to stay for July 2015 and now I'll stay in KK Nossob GK and Uirkaruus...... so don't give up Linda! Dutch people are famous for their perseverance (voor hun eigewijze doordrammen en proberen totdat ze krijgen wat ze willen ! )

I got through to reservations at 7.30am, held on for 40 minutes only to be informed that the only accommodation that was available at Nossob were camp sites. Patience and daily checks now get the accommodation I want.

This is because of "blanket booking". Nobody has to significantly pay until the last minute so everything is booked out until the full payment is due. This will only change when SANPs changes their policy to full payment on making the reservation.

...which is already the case with the online system. Full prepayment should be requested also for phone/e-mail bookings however, to avoid situations as these. Refundable booking indeed, but at least one has to put the money!

Michele.

I disagree, shfish. The current payment policy is 50% (rather than the previous 2/3) due one month after the reservation is made with the 50% balance being due two months before the start of the booking. For many, particularly those, like me, who travel from overseas and usually book for several weeks' stay, rather than a few days, to pay in full a year in advance would be a hardship and a disincentive. There may be such "blanket booking" by tour operators who don't have the financial restraints of indivduals, but I doubt there are many individuals who make a booking just on the off chance that they will be able to visit.

@arthas. Perhaps it's easy for you to pay several hundred dollars (for my own upcoming parks visit the cost is substantial) for a holiday a year in advance, but I need (as well as prefer) to budget for those payments over time. SANParks are expensive enough for a solo traveller; at least with the present payment policy, I have the choice to stagger my payments.

50% is enough commitment I agree. But why 1 month later? Credit card charge at time of booking would be much better, and would likely avoid some blanket bookings.

Also, a bit of consistency wouldn't hurt: if it's 50% advance payment over the phone, it should be the same through the online system as well. Or vice versa.

Michele.

It is clear that blanket booking is happening and it makes it very difficult. After one day Grootkolk KK Gharagab Urikaruus wiped out, Nossob incredibly also. The system isn't working and I am deeply suspicious of preferential booking.
