I love them even if they give my the hebe jebies. I have heard them many a time at night but have never seen one if the wild so I'm extremely jealous of all of you.

What a superb seri9es of photos. A whole encyclopedia of hyena beaviour. Maternal love, aggression aggression, pack behaviour. Wonderful!

In a number of photos the ambiguous gentitalia are illustrated.

There is continuing research extending the fine studies of Gus Mills & Tim Caro on the hyena. A group in California is unravelling the evolution of maternal dominance in hyena society & the role that testosterone metabolism plays in this unusual behaviour & genital development. It has important implications in understanding development of ambiguous genitalia in humans.

The testosterone overdose in females results in them being able to protect their pups but the disadvantage of having masculinized genitalia is the high maternal & neonatal mortality at birth.

I have battled for many hours to understand the biochemistry, molecular biology, & embryology behind all this.Wildlife physiology is a hobby I have added to my photography to try & keep alzheimer at bay. I hope i have been able to simplify it all for the general reader.

If you are interested in more background to hyena behaviour have a look at the 4 parts on hyena 's on my blog http://blog.africaraw.com or enter it via navigation bar of our photographic website http://www.africaraw.com

There are some really awesome hyena photos in this great thread!
The following photos are from the Kamqua clan taken at the end of December last year! Here must have been more than 10 hyenas I would guess!

On top of the dune these lot were busy on a kill!

The rear end of a very sleepy hyena!
